Wohldorf-Ohlstedt can be explored for trip planning through three main themes: Wohldorfer Forest, information and excursion tips for Duvenstedter Brook, and the history of light railway services. If you are looking for a hotel in Wohldorf-Ohlstedt, you can use your interests as a starting point: Are you mainly interested in walks, learning about local wildlife and plant life, or transport history?

Forest and Trails

Wohldorfer Forest is located in the Wohldorf-Ohlstedt district and is Hamburg’s largest contiguous deciduous forest. A loop through the forest is about 7 km long. The “soil trail” and the “historical-ecological adventure trail” are open to visitors. For orientation at the southern end, the Ohlstedt terminus of the U1 is a useful reference point: from there, the southern end of the forest is just a few minutes’ walk away.

Information about Duvenstedter Brook

Duvenstedter BrookHus is a museum and tourist information center in Wohldorf-Ohlstedt. It features a multimedia permanent exhibition; its content may change. Visitors can get information there about the wildlife and plant life of Duvenstedter Brook, as well as excursion tips for the Brook. If you are interested in this landscape and its wildlife and plant life, BrookHus brings an exhibition and visitor information together in one place.

Routes and Walks

There are two different points of reference to help you choose a route: the loop through Wohldorfer Forest is about 7 km long, while the Großhansdorf–Ohlstedt circuit passes through Duvenstedter Brook and then continues to Ohlstedt U-Bahn station. This lets you decide whether to plan around the length of a forest walk or a route that ends at a named destination.

A visit to Wohldorf-Ohlstedt Cemetery can also be combined with a walk along scenic trails through the varied natural landscape. Since trail conditions can change, it is best to check them before your walk.

Light Railway History

The Local Transit Museum at Kleinbahnhof Wohldorf is located in the former freight handling building of the Altrahlstedt–Volksdorf–Wohldorf electric light railway. It displays original parts, documents, models and photographs about the history of the Walddörfer tramway from Wohldorf to Ohlstedt, which operated until 1961, as well as the history of public transport in Hamburg and the surrounding area. The exhibition’s focus therefore ranges from a specific historic tram line to public transport in the wider Hamburg context.

More topics in the wider travel destination of Hamburg

The travel destination of Hamburg also offers architectural and urban perspectives. Speicherstadt and the Kontorhaus District, including Chilehaus, were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015. For views, you can compare two different destinations: the 132-metre-high tower of St. Michael’s Church offers a 360-degree panorama over the harbour, Speicherstadt and central Hamburg. The Elbphilharmonie Plaza is 37 metres above ground and offers views over the Elbe, the harbour, Speicherstadt and HafenCity.

Planten un Blomen in Hamburg offers a different perspective on the landscape. The 45-hectare park includes flowerbeds, broad lawns, streams, small lakes and themed gardens. From May to September, water-light concerts take place every evening on the park lake; check the current programme before your trip.
