Red-brick warehouses, canals and bridges define Hamburg’s Speicherstadt; museums, parks and special experiences reveal other sides of the city. The themes range from maritime history and art to seasonal water-light concerts and insights into a chocolate workshop. When planning your trip, you can prioritize these different highlights according to your interests.

Speicherstadt and maritime history

The Speicherstadt is a red-brick warehouse complex with canals, bridges and streets. It was built near the Port of Hamburg from the late 19th century onward and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015. Kaispeicher B in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt houses the world’s largest private collection of maritime treasures, spanning 3,000 years of shipping and naval history. Two historical perspectives thus come together in this part of Hamburg: the architecture of a warehouse complex and a collection spanning several millennia.

At Miniatur Wunderland, too, the focus is on how a landscape is created and designed. In open construction areas and workshops, visitors can look over the shoulders of model makers and technical teams as they work. Specific visitor opportunities may change, so check before your visit.

Art, architecture and history

Hamburger Kunsthalle is one of Germany’s most important and largest art museums. Its collection takes visitors through eight centuries of European art history, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Those interested in different eras will find a timeline here that extends far beyond a single century.

Hamburg City Hall offers a different historical perspective: built between 1886 and 1897, its striking architecture defines the city center. While the Kunsthalle brings together a collection spanning eight centuries, the focus at City Hall is the architecture of a specific building and the period in which it was constructed.

For children aged five and up, the Kunsthalle offers participatory art activities together with their families. These include a weekly family session and holiday workshops. As specific dates may change, it is worth checking the current program before your visit.

Seasonal and special experiences

From May to September, colorful water-light concerts take place every evening on the park lake at Planten un Blomen. The program therefore offers a distinct seasonal highlight. If you would like to plan your stay around a concert, check the exact dates before your trip.

Hagenbeck Zoo is a 19-hectare zoo with botanical diversity, listed panoramas, open enclosures and numerous cultural buildings. It is home to more than 1,400 animals from over 140 species; these figures may change over time. The zoo’s varied features bring together its animal population, open spaces and landscaped grounds in a single destination.

At CHOCOVERSUM, chocolate becomes an experience, from the aroma of the bean to a bar you create yourself. This offers a different focus from an art collection, zoo or historic architecture: the emphasis is on the journey from bean to your own chocolate creation. As booking arrangements may change, check the available booking options before making plans.

Getting to the Elbphilharmonie

The Elbphilharmonie can be reached via the U3 to Baumwall, bus routes 111 and 6, and HADAG Harbor Ferry 72. The stops or ferry piers listed are Baumwall, Am Kaiserkai, Auf dem Sande and the Elbphilharmonie. If you plan to use this route, check connections and stop names again before setting out.

When planning, it is worth noting the different time frames of these experiences: the water-light program runs from May to September, while the Kunsthalle’s collection spans from the Middle Ages to the present day. The Speicherstadt and City Hall complement these cultural highlights with architectural and maritime history.
