If you’re looking for a hotel in Hamburg, you can shape your stay around your interests: the harbor and the Elbe, water activities, parks, architecture or music. The city offers a range of ways to explore these themes. The following places and activities can help you decide what to focus on during your trip. Check seasonal programs and changing schedules in advance.

Experience the harbor and the Elbe

Numerous boats depart from the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken for harbor cruises. The Old Elbe Tunnel also connects the Landungsbrücken with the harbor area in Steinwerder. Pedestrians and cyclists can pass through it free of charge around the clock; it is closed on New Year’s Eve.

With a regular HVV ticket, you can take HADAG ferry 62 along the Elbe. Check the current route before setting off, as services may change. For a different view of the water, visit the Elbphilharmonie Plaza: 37 meters above ground, it offers views over the Elbe, the harbor, the Speicherstadt and HafenCity.

St. Michael’s Church is another highlight for panoramic views. Its 132-meter-high tower offers a 360-degree panorama of the harbor, the Speicherstadt and central Hamburg. Admission to the church is free; paid tickets are required for the tower and crypt. As ticket conditions may change, it’s a good idea to check the latest information before your visit.

Brick architecture, museums and music

The Speicherstadt is known for its red-brick buildings, canals, bridges and streets. The warehouse complex was built near the Port of Hamburg from the late 19th century onward. Today, it’s also home to museums, cafés and restaurants. The Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus District, including Chilehaus, were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015.

In Hamburg, the Kunsthalle’s collection spans eight centuries of European art history, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Children aged five and up can take part in activities with their families, including a weekly family session and holiday workshops. Specific workshop dates may change. At Miniatur Wunderland, visitors can watch model makers and technical teams bring a new landscape to life in open construction areas and workshops; check the visit options in advance.

The Elbphilharmonie offers a concert program to suit a range of musical tastes. If architecture and history in the cityscape are important to you, consider visiting Hamburg City Hall, too: built between 1886 and 1897, its architecture is a defining feature of the city center.

The Alster, parks and nature

Hamburg offers a variety of activities on the water. Paths along the shores of the Outer Alster are ideal for walks and popular with joggers. The Alster is also a destination for stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing and pedal boating. You can choose between activities along the shore and on the water.

Planten un Blomen is a 45-hectare park with flowerbeds, wide lawns, streams, small lakes and themed gardens. From May to September, water-and-light concerts take place every evening on the park lake. Check the current program and specific dates before your trip.

Ohlsdorf Cemetery is a natural monument with mature trees, rhododendrons, ponds and waterways. It provides a habitat for increasingly rare animals such as hedgehogs, eagle owls and bats, as well as gray herons and deer. Hagenbeck Zoo also offers a green escape: the 19-hectare zoo features botanical diversity, listed panoramic views, open-air enclosures and cultural buildings.
