Mescherin on the Polish Border
Accommodation in Mescherin
Mescherin lies directly on the Polish border. The West Oder separates the Uckermark from Gryfino; a bridge connects the town with Gryfino on the Polish side of the Oder. Highlights of a stay include views across the Staffelde Polder, cycling and hiking routes, and archaeological evidence from various periods. This lets you get to know the town through its landscape, outdoor activities or local history.
Landscape and Views
The Staffelde Zone I protected area covers about 27 hectares within the municipality of Mescherin. In part of the Staffelde Polder, nature was able to develop undisturbed for 20 years. The observation tower at the edge of town resembles a crane in shape and offers views across the Staffelde Polder.
Cycling and Hiking Routes
The Oder–Neisse Cycle Route runs through the entire town. The Märkischer Landweg is 217 kilometres long, crosses the Uckermark in ten stages and passes through three National Natural Landscapes; Mescherin is its starting or finishing point. The total distance refers to the long-distance trail as a whole, not to a route within the town. It reaches Mescherin via a sunken lane along the steep west bank of the Oder, next to the riverside fortification. Stettiner Berg lies above the village; a strenuous climb leads to the top. This matters when planning: the cycle route passes through Mescherin, the Landweg includes the town as a starting or finishing point, and reaching Stettiner Berg involves a strenuous climb.
The Uckermark has 1,200 kilometres of designated hiking trails. The Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park offers more than 150 kilometres of water trails and over 600 kilometres of signposted hiking trails.
Local History
The Brandenburg archaeological register, in its edition dated 1 January 2025, lists contexts from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman Imperial period and Slavic Middle Ages for Mescherin. It also records an archaeological site with remains of the medieval and modern village centre, church remains, a Slavic medieval settlement, a modern cemetery and prehistoric settlement traces. The edition of the Brandenburg State Monument List dated 1 January 2025 lists the church at Obere DorfstraĂźe 39 as a protected architectural monument.
