Lakes and paths around Wendisch Rietz

To the north of Wendisch Rietz lies Lake ScharmĂĽtzelsee, covering 13.9 square kilometers. To the south is the Glubig lake chain, surrounded by almost unspoiled nature. To the west lies Lake Storkower See, which has been connected to Lake ScharmĂĽtzelsee by the Rietzer Graben since 1732. This location places the bodies of water in their respective compass directions; the Rietzer Graben also marks a historic connection between two lakes.

The 9-kilometer Wendisch Rietz local walking tour starts and ends at the Haus des Gastes. This provides a clearly defined starting and ending point for the route. The 66 Lakes Hiking Trail starts at Wendisch Rietz railway station and links the Glubig lakes south of the village. The two routes offer different ways to explore: a circular route through the village and a connection to the lakes to the south.

Kneipp facilities, bathing area and leisure park

The Kneipp Park in Wendisch Rietz has a fitness trail, Kneipp pools for adults and children, a meditation meadow and a playground. There are also foot and arm baths, a barefoot path and fitness equipment for independent use. In the herb garden, you can learn about the healing properties of local herbs. At the Kneipp corner, a water feature and an arm basin invite you to enjoy Kneipp treatments.

The Festwiese bathing area is on Lake ScharmĂĽtzelsee. Its facilities include a well-maintained sunbathing lawn, a small sandy beach and step-free access to the water for wheelchair users. If this access is important for your plans, check the current condition of the facilities before your visit.

For the Seerosen tour, you can rent the required canoe at the starting point from Surf & Fun in Wendisch Rietz. Before setting off, check whether rentals are currently offered and canoes are available. Scharmuntzelland leisure park has an adventure playground and a petting zoo with ponies, alpacas, donkeys and other animals. If you plan to visit the park, check that it is currently open before your trip.

Village life and special insights

The centrally located Haus des Gastes houses the Tourist Information office and “Books & More.” You’ll find novels as well as children’s, young adult and nonfiction books; there is also a children’s play corner and a small selection of board games. The building is also the starting and ending point of the local walking tour.

The fishing tradition is still carried on today at Fischland ScharmĂĽtzelsee. Fresh fish and regional smoking expertise have shaped this part of the village for many years. The remains of the former Schwarzhorn hunting lodge can be seen in the woods on Schwarzhorner Weg. The grounds are not accessible, so the visible remains should be distinguished from the inaccessible site.

Getting here and water connections

A train connection from Berlin Central Station goes via Königs Wusterhausen, taking the RE7 and then the RB36 to Wendisch Rietz. Check current timetables before travelling, as services may change. Built in Wendisch Rietz in 1862, the lock enables direct boat traffic from there all the way to Berlin.
