Liepe can be understood through its village church, the history of its sawmills and the paths around the Landhof. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Liepe, these topics can help with your travel planning: architecture and local history offer a different focus from cycling and the use of paved paths. Consider which of these aspects matter for your trip.

Village Church and Mill History

Today’s Liepe village church is a half-timbered church with a two-storey, square western tower clad in boards. It was built from 1950 to 1954 on the site of an earlier church. The dates refer to the present building; the earlier church stood in the same place. Guided tours of the village church and the village can be arranged by prior appointment.

The history of the mills adds another time frame to the local history: the Gramberg mill followed in Liepe shortly after the Friedrich Wilhelms Mill of Pattri, built in 1841. Both were among the oldest sawmills in the village. The church was therefore built considerably later than the aforementioned mill, built in 1841.

Paths and Cycling

There is an extensive network of paths in the area around the Landhof Liepe. The paved towpaths are used by cyclists, skaters and wheelchair users. Long-distance cycle route L29 runs as mixed traffic on the road through the Liepe village center; the section within the village is 492 meters long. The paved towpaths and the L29 therefore differ in how traffic is accommodated. Check local conditions before setting out.

Barnim as a Regional Addition

The wider travel destination of Barnim adds its own regional themes. To look beyond Liepe, Barnim can be considered in terms of cultural and technological history, as well as nature and water-based activities. Chorin Monastery is a key work of North German Brick Gothic architecture. The Niederfinow Boat Lift is Germany’s oldest working boat lift; the Finow Canal is Germany’s oldest navigable artificial waterway.

At the Finow Canal, history and activity come together: it is a navigable artificial waterway, and canoe trips are available there. Sightseeing cruises are offered on Lake Werbellin. Each of these two water activities is associated with a different body of water.

Barnim also offers different scales for hiking and cycling. The “Around the Schorfheide” circular hiking trail is 143 kilometers long and passes through Barnim Nature Park. The cycle route network in Barnim district has a total length of 610 kilometers. Cycling in Barnim Nature Park is an activity for visitors to the district. When comparing them, the types of offering matter: the circular hiking trail is a specific hiking route, while the cycle route network is a district-wide total. They therefore answer different questions when planning a trip.

Numerous bathing lakes in Barnim offer opportunities for relaxation. The Ice Age Geopark on the Oderbruch Edge extends across the districts of Uckermark and Barnim in northeastern Brandenburg. Lakes and a geopark spanning two districts are therefore also part of the regional picture of Barnim.
