Discover Hohenfinow
Accommodation in Hohenfinow
Hohenfinow combines a rural setting with a distinctive historic village centre. The village and its districts of Karlswerk and Struwenberg lie on the edge of the Barnim region, amid fields, meadows and woodland. Hohenfinow is one of Brandenburg’s ten historic village centres. This provides a clear guide when choosing a destination: village history and architecture take centre stage alongside the open landscape. When planning a hotel stay, you can consider whether you mainly want to explore the village itself or also include the wider themes of the Barnim region in your travel plans.
Village green and historic townscape
The tree-lined, four-row village green stretches from the former castle towards the church. Visitors can stroll beneath the old lime trees on the green.
Fieldstone church and architectural history
The village church was built before 1250 as a three-aisled fieldstone basilica with a west tower, choir and semicircular apse. “Three-aisled” describes the division of the church interior into three aisles. After being destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War, the church was rebuilt on a smaller scale. Historic murals from 1910 have shone with renewed brilliance since 2004. Sculpted fieldstones at the ends of the arcade piers form a capital-like element. The church can therefore be appreciated both for its overall form and for an architectural detail. The restored church invites visitors to look inside; check in advance when a visit is possible.
Other historic sites and regional brewing
The former castle was a two-storey building, damaged in 1945 and demolished around 1961. Visitors can walk to the cemetery, where the Bethmann-Hollweg grave and a preserved burial chapel are located. Together with the church and village green, these sites offer different insights into Hohenfinow’s history.
Barnimer Brauhaus brews regional beer in Hohenfinow/Struwenberg. Its traditionally made range includes Landbier, Festbier and Pils. Bottled and draught beer are sold from the brewery yard. If you want to take home a particular variety, check current availability, as it may change. The brewery adds a local production theme to the historic sights.
Hohenfinow within the wider Barnim travel destination
The wider Barnim travel destination also focuses on cycling in Barnim Nature Park, hiking in the Schorfheide and relaxing at numerous swimming lakes. Barnim Nature Park encompasses extensive forests, lakes, wetlands, natural river valleys and kettle holes. This means regional nature and activity themes complement Hohenfinow’s own focus on village history and architecture. This distinction helps you choose the kind of stay you want without conflating regional attractions with the characteristics of the village itself. In the Barnim region, Chorin Monastery is a landmark of North German Brick Gothic architecture.
