Karow offers two distinct points of interest for your trip to Berlin: the nearby Karow Ponds and the historic village center of Alt-Karow. When choosing what to visit, you can consider whether you are mainly interested in observing nature, learning about the village’s history, or including other places in the wider destination of Berlin.

Karow Ponds: Water, Reeds and Birdlife

The nearby Karow Ponds nature reserve consists of four former peat-cutting and fish ponds. Four observation platforms offer views across the reed beds to the water. The area is an important resting and breeding ground for waterbirds and birds of the reed zones. A visit therefore focuses both on the landscape and on its importance as a habitat.

You can observe birds along the circular trails. Possible wildlife sightings include grass snakes and sand lizards; more than 20 dragonfly species can be found here in summer. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. The ponds are therefore especially suited to an outing where observing the surroundings matters more than following a set programme.

Getting around on foot

The ponds are a little over a 20-minute walk from Karow S-Bahn station. There is another entrance on Bucher Straße. The Panke Trail and the Barnim Village Trail also cross in the area. This offers different options: the paths are suitable for longer hikes and bike rides as well as shorter walks. As routes may change, check the signposting before setting out.

Alt-Karow and its Village History

The historic village street of Alt-Karow is characterized by a 13th-century village church and 19th-century farmhouses. The village ensemble and individual three-sided farmsteads are protected as historic monuments. The village center thus offers a different focus from the ponds: the traditional village layout and protected buildings take center stage. Karow offers two clearly distinct themes for anyone wishing to include both nature observation and local history in their trip.

Berlin as a Wider Travel Destination

Beyond Karow, Berlin offers more options for a variety of interests. Tiergarten is Berlin’s largest and most visited inner-city park, where the focus is on walking, outdoor activities and picnicking. Tempelhofer Feld is a large public park used for picnicking, sunbathing and sports. Both parks are part of the wider destination of Berlin and are attractions in their own right, not features of Karow.

Berlin also has cultural and historical attractions: Museum Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Brandenburg Gate, built in 1791, is regarded as a symbol of German reunification. The walkable glass dome of the Reichstag offers views of nearby sights and city life; access arrangements may change. Check them before your visit. This makes it possible to combine Karow’s focus on nature and village history with other interests specifically associated with Berlin, without conflating the places.

If you are looking for a hotel in Karow, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the nearby ponds, the historic village street or other experiences in Berlin. The walking time to the ponds and the seasonal, non-guaranteed wildlife sightings are practical details to consider when planning.
