Schmöckwitz: Lakes, Forest and Village History
Accommodation in Schmöckwitz
Schmöckwitz is surrounded by forest and water. The surrounding lakes include Lange See, Seddinsee, Krossinsee, Zeuthener See and Großer Zug. The various lakes provide several points of reference in the waterscape.
Swimming Areas and Waterfronts
The Schmöckwitz swimming area is on the northeastern shore of Zeuthener See. There is a volleyball court beside the large sandy beach; the swimming area can be reached by tram, bus and car. Schmöckwitz lido is another option for swimming: it is located on the Dahme, not far from Schmöckwitz Bridge, and invites visitors to take a dip. Schmöckwitz marina, with berths available to rent, is on Lange See. This lets you distinguish between the swimming area with its sandy beach, the lido on the Dahme and the marina as different waterfront options.
Village History and Church
Schmöckwitz was established as a circular village on a peninsula in the 13th century. Despite later changes, the village layout around the church still preserves its medieval plan and forms a historic monument ensemble. The village’s history therefore includes not only its early beginnings, but also the village layout that has survived to this day.
Sunday services are still held in the old village church; concerts in support of aid projects are also held there. Check service times and concert dates before visiting.
Exploring on Foot
There are various landmarks to help you find your way around the area. The Dahme Trail leads out of the center of Alt-Schmöckwitz, across Schmöckwitz Bridge and the Dahme ford, and into the forested Schmöckwitzer Werder. A shady, waymarked riverside path leads from Alt-Schmöckwitz to Rauchfangswerder. The bridge, ford and forested Werder shape the route of the Dahme Trail, while shade, waymarking and destination are the defining features of the riverside path. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Exploring the Wider Destination of Berlin
If you are planning a stay in the wider destination of Berlin, other attractions may influence your choice. Tiergarten is Berlin’s largest and most visited inner-city park, and is ideal for walks, outdoor activities and picnics. Tempelhofer Feld is also a large public park, where people picnic, sunbathe and play sports. Berlin’s cultural history includes Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Brandenburg Gate, built in 1791 and a symbol of German reunification. These Berlin destinations offer different points of interest from Schmöckwitz’s lakes, trails and village history. The Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park adds another cultural and historical landmark: it is the central memorial to fallen soldiers of the Red Army.
Tram line 68 runs between Wendenschloß and Alt-Schmöckwitz. Check current BVG service updates before travelling.
