Hellersdorf is surrounded by greenery, the Hönower Weiherkette chain of ponds and the Wuhletal valley. Its landscape, leisure activities in Kienbergpark and the history of the former village each offer something different.

Wuhletal and Wuhlesteg

The Wuhletal valley is characterised by diverse floodplain and meadow landscapes, as well as smaller bodies of water, most of them artificially created. These include the Wuhleteich pond. Shallow-water zones created in some areas make this a natural area that is deliberately protected, allowing its flora and fauna to develop. The bodies of water and open landscapes give the surrounding greenery its own distinctive character.

The approximately 280-metre-long Wuhlesteg connects the districts of Marzahn and Hellersdorf. From the bridge, visitors can enjoy views of protected vegetation and a diverse array of wildlife. The Wuhlesteg thus highlights both the connection between the two districts and the natural surroundings.

Kienbergpark: Leisure, Nature and Views

Kienbergpark covers 60 hectares, with the 110-metre-high Kienberg at its centre. The park offers space for leisure, play and experiencing nature. The Wolkenhain on the Kienberg offers another perspective: from its highest point, 120 metres above sea level, the view extends beyond central Berlin and the TV Tower to the Brandenburg countryside.

Visitors with limited mobility can use a lift at the Wolkenhain. Kienbergpark is a public green space and is fully accessible. As visiting and accessibility conditions may change, check the latest information about the park and lift before your visit.

The “Wilde Welt” nature discovery area is part of the nature experience at Kienbergpark: covering 16,000 square metres, it gives children and young people space to run around and play independently in nature. At Kienberggarten, a gardening community cultivates around 600 square metres according to the principles of permaculture. Interested visitors are welcome to get involved.

Learning Centre at Wuhleteich

The environmental education centre is on the western shore of Wuhleteich, on a 20-metre-wide and 60-metre-long larch wood platform. It was built for IGA Berlin 2017 at the western end of the Wuhlesteg. The centre serves as a learning space for sustainable development and as a central meeting point; its open space is suited to lectures and workshops.

Promenade and Local History

Hellersdorfer Promenade is a pedestrian zone between blocks of apartment buildings. In spring, the cherry trees bloom pale pink. This seasonal scene adds an urban accent to the surrounding landscapes and green spaces.

The history of the former village of Hellersdorf can also be traced through tangible finds. Excavations carried out from 1983 to 1986 on the site of the former village, roughly near today’s Cottbusser Platz underground station, uncovered the former village church, a cemetery, homes, a bread oven and everyday objects. The finds offer a glimpse into village life in the past, while keeping in view the different nature and leisure attractions of Hellersdorf today.
