Nagel is associated with three specific themes: relaxation by the lake, a circular trail and a story from the village. There are also regional hiking and cycling themes in the Fichtelgebirge, which form part of a wider area.

Relaxation and a garden at Lake Nagel

The Lake Nagel recreational area includes a natural swimming lake that is a defining feature of the village and invites visitors to relax all year round. The seasonal fragrance and butterfly garden is also located by Lake Nagel. Covering 1,400 m², it attracts butterflies and bees with, among other things, fragrant roses, mint, thyme and lavender. A thyme lounger and seating areas invite you to linger.

Four bicycle garages with e-charging stations are available directly below the car park at Lake Nagel. If you plan to use them, check the local situation in advance.

Circular trail and local history

The “Das Teutsche Paradeiß” circular trail and nature experience path is 16 kilometres long and takes in notable spots around Nagel. Its length gives you a concrete reference point for planning your own tour.

The name of the Girglhöhle tells another story from the village: the cave is named after the “Schmiedmatzengirgel”. He came from neighbouring Mühlbühl in the municipality of Nagel and spent seven years in the cave. So, alongside the natural experience, there is also a specific historical connection and a link to the municipality of Nagel.

Regional routes in Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge

In the wider destination of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge, hiking trails lead through diverse natural landscapes to the region’s highest peaks: Schneeberg (1,051 m) and Ochsenkopf (1,024 m). There are also connections to the Franconian Mountain Trail and the Jean-Paul Trail. These routes form a regional hiking network that extends beyond the description of the circular trail around Nagel.

The Bavarian section of the Eger Cycle Path is around 55 kilometres long and follows the Eger through Bad Weißenstadt, Röslau, Marktleuthen, Thierstein, Selb, Hohenberg a.d.E. and Schirnding. On the Czech side, the cycle path continues via Pomezí nad Ohří and Cheb, where it connects to Czech long-distance cycle route No. 6 / Cyklostezka Ohře. Check local route information if you are planning around possible closures or diversions.

The 16-kilometre circular trail and the roughly 55-kilometre Bavarian section of the Eger Cycle Path represent different scales of excursion: a hiking route around Nagel and a cycling route along the Eger.

Mining and granite in the wider region

The wider destination of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge also includes themed attractions in other towns. The “Kleiner Johannes” historic mine in Arzberg focuses on mining and geology. The Häuselloh show quarry in Selb explores the extraction and processing of granite; guided tours are available on request. The two places offer different focuses: mining and geology in one, granite extraction and processing in the other. If you are planning a guided tour, contact the operator.

When looking for a hotel in Nagel, you can first decide whether you want to focus on the village’s local attractions or also include regional routes and destinations. This lets you tailor your search to your planned destination.
