Alzenau brings together cultural history, themed trails and landscapes as distinct highlights for a stay. Three European Cultural Trails of the Archaeological Spessart Project run through the Alzenau municipal area. Their information boards present archaeological, historical, geological and biological features of the cultural landscape. The range therefore extends from history to nature-related topics.

Cultural Trails and Alzenau Castle

The “Wine and Power” Cultural Trail runs from Wasserlos in a loop of about 5 km to Alzenau; another loop leads about 7 km to Hörstein. The entire route can also be walked. Alzenau Castle is the focal point of this cultural trail. It was built around 1400 in connection with Alzenau being granted town rights. The route thus brings together the town’s history and the trail’s different loops.

Another circular hike is “Forest and Pilgrimage”. The trail is about 8 km long and leads from the castle car park via the Zeller clay pit to the highest point in the municipal area. From there, it continues to the “Maria zum Rauhen Wind” pilgrimage church and returns to the castle via the Seven Sorrows Trail in the Kahl valley. These landmarks give you a clear overview of the route.

Museum and Wine-Growing Village of Michelbach

In the Alzenau district of Michelbach, Michelbach Manor House has housed the Alzenau City Museum since 2006. Exhibits, displays and media technology present Alzenau’s history. The focus is on boundary lines, regional independence and far-reaching upheavals. Anyone interested in the town’s development will find a different perspective here than on the trails through the cultural landscape: the museum tells its story through exhibits and presentations.

Michelbach is also the northernmost Franconian wine-growing village and is known for its vineyards. The rose garden in the freely accessible grounds of Michelbach Manor House blooms in early summer. The garden offers its own seasonal highlight, while the museum and vineyards showcase Michelbach’s character in other ways.

Hahnenkamm and Forest Swimming Pool

The wooded Hahnenkamm ridge rises to 437 m and defines Alzenau’s townscape. The Ludwig Tower stands on its crest. The Freigerichter Bund originally built the tower in 1880; it was converted in 2004. The ridge and tower provide another distinctive landmark in Alzenau’s landscape.

Alzenau Forest Swimming Pool is located above Alzenau Castle and is family-friendly. Its children’s bathing area includes a toddlers’ pool with slides, spray jets and a spray column, as well as a paddling pool with a stream and a weir for play. If you plan to visit the pool, check its seasonal opening arrangements before travelling.

Train Connections and Choosing Your Highlights

The Westfrankenbahn offers a direct train service called the “Bembel” from Schöllkrippen via Alzenau to Hanau. As a public transport service, it enables Alzenau residents to travel beyond the town limits. If you are considering this connection when planning your trip, check the current timetable.

When looking for a hotel in Alzenau, you can first consider what you would like your stay to focus on: the castle and its history, the cultural trails, the museum, the Hahnenkamm or the swimming pool. The trails differ in route and length; the information about the loops and circular hike can help you assess these options when planning.
