Wiesen offers several distinct themes for a stay: the restored Mainz Hunting Lodge, St. James’ Church, a cultural trail in the Aubach Valley, and paths to Lake Wiesbütt and Wiesbütt Moor. A longer cycling tour also passes through the village. The routes offer different highlights: forest and views on the cultural trail contrast with the lake and moor on the Wiesen Circular Trail.

Castle, Church and Brewing History

Mainz Hunting Lodge in Wiesen has been restored and acquired its present-day Renaissance appearance in 1597. St. James’ Church features stucco ornamentation on the ceiling panels, ceiling paintings and Baroque altars. Its furnishings also include a baptismal font, a pulpit, various paintings, statues of saints and an organ gallery. The two buildings offer distinct cultural highlights: the castle’s Renaissance appearance and the church’s furnishings.

Another chapter in the village’s history is its privately owned brewery. Founded in 1888 as a civic brewery, it is still in operation and is the only private brewery in the district of Aschaffenburg. Its founding year and its present-day operation represent different aspects of its history.

Circular Trails in the Aubach Valley and at Lake WiesbĂĽtt

The approximately 9 km-long “Wirtschaftsstandort Wiesen” cultural trail leads from Wiesen Castle down into the Aubach Valley Nature Reserve. In the forest, it passes Wiesener Kreuz and continues to a viewpoint at the edge of the forest. The route thus connects the castle, its starting point, with a forest section and a viewpoint.

The Aubach Valley Nature Reserve is also home to an excavated 18th-century glassworks. It is another historic point of interest in the valley; the route also passes through the forest to the aforementioned stops at Wiesener Kreuz and the edge of the forest.

The Wiesen Circular Trail starts at the Alte Dreschhalle and follows a forest path to Lake WiesbĂĽtt. It goes around the lake and along WiesbĂĽtt Moor, then returns to the starting point via the Panorama Trail above Wiesen. WiesbĂĽtt Moor lies in neighbouring Hesse, about 3 km from Wiesen, and is the only raised bog in the Spessart.

When choosing a circular route, it is helpful to consider its course: Wiesener Kreuz and the viewpoint are on the cultural trail, while the lake, moor and Panorama Trail shape the Wiesen Circular Trail. Check local guidance and current trail conditions before setting out.

Cycling Tours and Hiking Trails in the District of Aschaffenburg

The 65 km Wiesbüttsee–Dammbach cycling tour starts at Lake Wiesbütt, on the Bavarian-Hessian border. It first passes through the forest above Wiesen and then descends into the village centre. The entire route follows part of the black-marked Bikewald Route A. As the cycling tour has its own route conditions, it is advisable to check the latest route information before setting off.

The wider Aschaffenburg travel destination offers other regional activities. The family-friendly MainRadweg runs through the Main Valley in the district of Aschaffenburg and is well signposted. The Kahltal-Spessart Cycle Route is also signposted and passes through the district’s landscapes. In the eastern High Spessart, four challenging cross-country routes are signposted as Bikewald-Spessart routes. The Denk mal – Rad mal app offers cycling tours in nature in the district, with stories, quizzes and information about places of interest. Before setting off, check the signage and the availability of the app and its content.

The district of Aschaffenburg’s hiking routes are another regional highlight. Spessart Trails 1, 2 and 3 pass through the district and have been awarded the German Hiking Association’s “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland” certification four times. The Eselsweg is a multi-day hike in the district; there are also more than 30 hiking tours along the cultural trails of the Archaeological Spessart Project. This makes it possible to distinguish the local options in Wiesen from the wider cycling and hiking activities in Aschaffenburg.
