Grafenrheinfeld: Nature, Culture and History
Accommodation in Grafenrheinfeld
Grafenrheinfeld offers several ways to discover nature and local history: protected landscapes, a walking trail past historic buildings and wayside shrines, and cultural events. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on the landscape, a route on foot, or an event.
Nature and Landscape
The Elmuß nature reserve lies in the southern part of Grafenrheinfeld’s municipal area, on the western edge of Röthlein. The Unkenbach flows through the floodplain forest. The stream and floodplain forest are the defining features of this protected area.
Another nature reserve in Grafenrheinfeld is “Sauerstücksee and Hirtenbachaue.” It covers 35 hectares and is home to an exceptionally wide variety of endangered bird and animal species. The “Altmainschleife Nord” local recreation area covers 34 hectares and includes a natural bathing spot. These areas offer distinct landscape experiences: floodplain forest by a stream, habitat for endangered species, and a recreation area with a natural bathing spot.
Discover History on Foot
Six information boards in the Grafenrheinfeld district provide information about historic field names, wayside shrines, and wayside crosses. Maps show the field names, with brief explanations, and also indicate the locations of the wayside shrines and crosses. The boards bring the landscape and its history to life through specific names and places.
The 10-kilometer Bildstock walking trail starts on Wehrspitzweg by the field chapel and passes historic buildings and wayside shrines. Its length and starting point give you two useful details for planning; the sights along the way also make the route’s historical character clear. If you plan to walk the trail, allow for the full 10 kilometers.
Church and Culture
The twin-towered Catholic parish church of Kreuzauffindung stands in the heart of the town and is a defining feature of Grafenrheinfeld. Its notable features include religious treasures and distinctive architecture inside and out. The Winterhalter organ in the parish church is heard in the “Musica Sacra” concert series; if you plan to attend a concert, check the relevant dates in advance.
Grafenrheinfeld Cultural Hall also hosts events, with a program that includes concerts, cabaret, and variety shows. Check local event listings if a particular date is important for your trip. Tours of the treasury and other attractions can be arranged by appointment. Contact the municipality to arrange such a visit.
Practical Information
Grafenrheinfeld Public Library has been in existence since 1985 and holds 25,000 media items. As a public library, it is open to all users, regardless of where they live. It is open 30 hours a week; as opening hours may change, check the current times before your visit.
When making your plans, bear in mind that a concert or event requires a suitable date, a guided tour requires advance booking, and a library visit depends on opening hours. These different requirements can be checked in advance, separately from the longer-term planning of a hike or a stay in nature.
More Places to Explore in the Schweinfurt Destination
The wider Schweinfurt destination offers additional nature and culture attractions. Brönnhof was added to the National Natural Heritage on January 13, 2016. The former military training area covers 746 hectares and provides a habitat for protected species such as Bechstein’s bat and the great crested newt. In the north of the district of Schweinfurt, Ellertshäuser See is used as a local recreation area.
The Franconian Wayside Shrine Center in Egenhausen offers a different focus: its modern permanent exhibition on the cultural history of wayside shrines covers around 90 square meters. Alongside the information boards and Bildstock walking trail in Grafenrheinfeld, this regional attraction offers different ways to explore the history of wayside shrines, without relying on a single place to represent it.
