Bergrheinfeld between the Main and Wern rivers
Accommodation in Bergrheinfeld
Bergrheinfeld lies at the southern end of the Schweinfurt Basin. The Main and Wern rivers shape the depression; both rivers run partly along the municipal boundary. The town offers several starting points for planning a trip: a circular route through wine-growing villages, longer cycling routes, birdwatching, and local church-fair traditions. Which of these suits your stay depends on whether you would rather focus on a specific cycling tour, nature, or local traditions.
Landscape and birdlife
At Garstadt, a district of Bergrheinfeld downstream on the Main, gentle hills give way to steep, wooded shell-limestone slopes that reach almost to the river. The old branch of the Main is also part of the municipality’s natural landscape; most of it is protected. Here, the river landscape, wooded slopes, and protected natural areas come together.
A total of 240 bird species have been recorded in the Garstadt bird sanctuary; around 45 of them are on the Red List of threatened species. These are cumulative records and may change over time. In 2006, the district of Schweinfurt built an observation platform in the bird sanctuary for birdwatching. Information boards give visitors an overview of the local flora and fauna. The platform and boards combine views of the landscape with information about its biodiversity.
Cycling routes in and through Bergrheinfeld
One specific local circular route is “Along the Main and the vineyards”: it is 18 kilometers long, connects the Wern and Main valleys, and passes through the wine-growing villages of Garstadt and Hergolshausen. This family-friendly tour is flat and easy, with no significant climbs. It mostly follows dedicated paved paths and partly uses quiet roads. The distance, terrain, and surface provide practical points of reference when choosing a route. Check the route locally once more before setting off.
Three longer cycling routes also pass through Bergrheinfeld. The 606-kilometer Main Cycle Route runs from the Main’s sources via Kulmbach, Bamberg, and Schweinfurt to its confluence with the Rhine near Wiesbaden. The 78-kilometer Wern Cycle Route runs from the source of the Wern via Bergrheinfeld to Gemünden-Wernfeld, where the Wern flows into the Main. The 135-kilometer Main-Werra Cycle Route runs from Würzburg via Werneck, Bergrheinfeld, and Schweinfurt to Meiningen in Thuringia. Each distance refers to the entire route described, not just the section in Bergrheinfeld.
Practical information for your journey
Cyclists can use three charging stations in the municipality, each with four charging compartments. They are located in the parking lot next to the old town hall in Garstadt, in the Gartenstraße parking lot in Bergrheinfeld, and at Zehnthof, Hauptstraße 36, in Bergrheinfeld. As availability can change, it is best to confirm locally if you need a charging point for your plans.
There is a landing stage on the Garstadt river promenade, at the former ferry crossing, at river kilometer 322.9. It is a ramp. This information describes the landing stage’s location and design; check local conditions before visiting.
Church-fair traditions in Bergrheinfeld and Garstadt
The Bergrheinfeld church fair is an annual tradition and is usually held in August. On Saturday, a procession makes its way through the village. Led by the Kirchweihreiter, the Plüaburschen bring two maypoles to the festival grounds and erect them at the entrance. The Plüapaare then dance there. This custom gives the church fair a clear sequence of events, distinct from Garstadt’s tree-planting and procession tradition.
At the Garstadt church fair in November, spruce trees are put up in front of the inns. Accompanied by the village musicians, the Fichtenburschen parade through the village with the trees. The different months make it easy to distinguish between the two local church fairs. If a specific date is important for your trip, check the event date in advance.
