Euerdorf brings together geological traces, hiking trails and local history with experiences along the Saale. The Euerdorf dinosaur footprints are a particularly distinctive feature: the Bavarian Environment Agency named them one of Bavaria’s 100 most beautiful geotopes. Nowhere else in Bavaria can the footprints be seen on such a large scale at the site where they were found. If you’re looking for a hotel in Euerdorf, you can plan your trip around these local highlights.

Geological Traces Around Euerdorf

The dinosaur footprints are tracks left by dinosaurs in soft ground. Nearby, the Karwinkel outcrop on the slope of the Saale Valley exposes rock layers up to 250 million years old. While the geotope reveals traces in the ground, Karwinkel makes the rock layers visible.

Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

The 7.5-kilometer Weg durch die Zeit (Path Through Time) is an easy hike. It mostly follows forest and meadow paths to the Terra Triassica Museum in Euerdorf. At 11 stops, information boards explain the flora and fauna of the different geological eras over the past 477 million years. Along the Weg durch die Zeit, you reach the “Saurierfährten Euerdorf” geotope after 3.75 kilometers via the Wichtelhöhlen.

The geotope can be reached via both the Euerdorf Circular Hiking Trail and the “Weg durch die Zeit” hiking trail and geological discovery trail between Bad Kissingen and Euerdorf. This gives you two named routes to choose from when planning a hike. A signposted circular walk in Euerdorf also takes you through the town’s different historical periods.

The “Wein & Stein” (Wine & Stone) panoramic trail starts in Euerdorf, next to the church at the Terra Triassica Museum, at Gerichtsgasse 22. From there, it leads through vineyards and forests and past sights. The trails therefore have different stated highlights: the Weg durch die Zeit connects geological eras and the geotope, while “Wein & Stein” takes in vineyards, forest and sights.

Building History and Townscape

The gate tower in Euerdorf is a three-story section of the late medieval fortifications. Because it contains an apartment, it is also called the “Torhaus” (gatehouse). Its features include stepped gables and a small Late Gothic sandstone relief on the exterior. The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist once served as a fortified church. The Terra Triassica Museum is housed in the former hunting lodge of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, built in 1598. The town’s history thus brings together fortifications, a fortified church and the historic hunting lodge in different ways.

The Saale Near Euerdorf, Winegrowing in Wirmsthal

The natural Saale meadows and riverbanks around Euerdorf provide a habitat for many animal and plant species. The Kneipp footbath near the Old Saale Bridge is right by the Saale and is fed with fresh water from the river. There is also a launch and landing point at the Old Saale Bridge in Euerdorf, where a river trip can begin or end. The footbath and the river access point offer two different ways to enjoy a stay by the water.

Wirmsthal is a district of the Euerdorf market town and the northernmost winegrowing village in the Franconian wine region. Thanks to the favorable climate and Triassic soils, distinctive Franconian wines such as Silvaner, MĂĽller-Thurgau, Bacchus and Domina grow in Wirmsthal. Winegrowing in Wirmsthal is another aspect to consider when planning your stay, alongside the hiking trails and geological features.
