Thanstein appeals to travelers who want to include nature experiences, walking routes and historic buildings in their travel plans. The options range from the Prackendorfer and Kulzer Moos nature reserve to trails with different features, as well as a castle tower, castle ruins, parish church and an artwork in Kulz. To find your bearings, it is worth noting the differences: the experience trail is defined by its length and boardwalks, while other routes are distinguished by features such as difficulty levels, views or connections to named trails.

Nature and Trails in the Prackendorfer and Kulzer Moos

The Prackendorfer and Kulzer Moos nature reserve is located in the municipality of Thanstein. A three-kilometer experience trail leads through parts of the protected area on boardwalks. Another option is the Schwarzwihrberg Nordic Walking Park: nine routes start in the municipality of Thanstein, with difficulty levels ranging from easy to challenging. The park routes are free to use. When comparing the options, different features stand out: the trail’s length and layout, and the park’s number of routes, difficulty levels and free access.

Routes with Distinctive Features

The Kaisereichen Route leads from Thanstein along developed forest paths to Lake Eixendorf and offers views across the water. The Warberg Route offers views of the reservoir bridge, Gütenland, Penting, the Murnthal, Rösslberg and Eibenstein; it is also suitable for Nordic walking. The two routes therefore differ both in their described courses and in their viewpoints.

The Zubringer-Kulzer Route is also suitable for Nordic walking. It starts at the Wintergarten Café in Thanstein, runs between two large ponds toward Kulz and joins the Kulzer Route there, which is also suitable for Nordic walking. On the Bauhof Route, clearly visible brown arrows help with navigation; they are placed approximately every 200 meters.

Castle Tower, Church and Artwork

The castle tower and ruins of Thanstein bear witness to medieval history. The freestanding round tower is 17 meters high and was restored in 1887. From there, the view stretches to the Bohemian Forest and the Bavarian Forest. Admission is free; access is via a card reader for an identity card or driver’s license.

The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist dates from the mid-16th century and was later extended. Its west tower dates from 1880/83. The Bodenwald Route passes the Thanstein parish church of St. John the Baptist. This makes it possible to consider a specific route and the history of a building together when planning.

An artwork resembling the famous Stonehenge in England stands on the eastern edge of Kulz and is more than six meters tall. Each granite stone in the structure weighs more than 40 tons. The comparison with Stonehenge describes the resemblance; the height and weight also convey the scale of the work.
