The “Up to Moritzberg” circular hike is a specific hiking route that passes through Leinburg. It runs from Diepersdorf via Leinburg, Moritzberg, Haimendorf and Rockenbrunn back to Diepersdorf. The tour is 13 km long, climbs 260 metres and takes about three hours. If you would like to include hiking in your trip, this gives you a clearly defined route connected to Leinburg.

Route and trail conditions

The route alternates between field and meadow tracks and forest paths; in built-up areas, it follows paved roads. Some sections have steep climbs. The distance, elevation gain and approximate duration give you concrete figures for planning your day, while the changing surfaces also shape the character of the trail. Along the hiking route, you will also pass the long-established Bub brewery, with its inn and beer garden.

Hiking in the wider Nürnberger Land destination

Beyond the individual circular hike, the Nürnberger Land, as a wider travel destination, offers a broad range of outdoor activities. More than 3,000 kilometres of well-marked hiking trails and well-developed cycling routes, with varying levels of difficulty, run through the Nürnberger Land. Another specific hiking route in the region is “Hohenstein (634 m) – SevenSummits” in Kirchensittenbach. It is 10.1 km long, with 406 metres of ascent and 397 metres of descent.

The two routes can be compared by distance: at 13 km, the “Up to Moritzberg” circular hike is longer than the 10.1 km route in Kirchensittenbach. This gives you two different distances in the Nürnberger Land to use as a guide when planning; the “Hohenstein – SevenSummits” route also specifies ascent and descent figures.

Landscape and other regional destinations

The Nürnberger Land is part of the Franconian Switzerland–Franconian Jura Nature Park. Regional natural attractions include the Franconian Dune Trail, which passes through sandstone ravines, sand dunes and shady forests. In the Bitterbach Gorge near Lauf an der Pegnitz, the landscape is shaped by steep, partially undercut gorge walls, rocks covered with mosses and ferns, deep crevices and holes, and small waterfalls. The Wengleinpark in Pommelsbrunn is a nature reserve founded by Carl Wenglein in 1930.

Culture and recreation are also among the themes of the Nürnberger Land. The German Shepherds’ Museum in Hersbruck displays clothing, equipment and handicrafts made by shepherds from around the world. The Fackelmann Therme Hersbruck is accessible to visitors with disabilities; lifts provide access to the foyer and thermal baths, as well as from there to the sports and adventure pool and the sauna park. The spa offers relaxation in mineral water officially recognised for its therapeutic properties and in a sauna area with seven saunas. These examples broaden the picture of the region to include museums, water and saunas, while the Moritzberg loop provides the specific connection to hiking in Leinburg.
