Reichenschwand: Castle History and the Pegnitz
Accommodation in Reichenschwand
Reichenschwand brings together several themes to consider when planning a stay: the medieval town center on the Pegnitz, castle history, the WERNER LĂ–FFLER COLLECTION, and a route that starts in the town.
Town Center and Historic Sites on the Pegnitz
Reichenschwand, with its districts of Oberndorf and Leuzenberg, lies in the wide Pegnitz Valley. The medieval town center extends about 400 meters from north to south, reaching right up to the river. The so-called Second Furtenbach Castle is located in the town center. On the opposite bank of the Pegnitz, across from the old town, is the site of the former moated castle of the Lords of Strahlenfels.
Reichenschwand Castle is an architectural and historical gem: in 1832, Stansky had the castle remodeled; it is the only preserved castle in the Nuremberg Land in the Neo-Gothic style. The castle is part of the Dormero SchloĂźhotel Reichenschwand and can be rented for all kinds of celebrations. If you are planning an event, confirm the details directly with the venue. Neo-Gothic refers to an architectural style that draws on and reinterprets forms of medieval Gothic architecture.
Collection and Things to Do Locally
The WERNER LÖFFLER COLLECTION in Reichenschwand brings together more than 1,300 distinctive, authentic chairs from three centuries. Werner Löffler has been collecting them since 1987. Visits are possible by appointment, so you can take this into account when planning your stay.
There is a playground with a skate park at the Am Anger sports grounds. The large skate park has various ramps and can be used as an ice-skating rink in winter. Check the conditions for use on site.
The Pegnitz Terraces Tour starts in Reichenschwand and heads south. After crossing the B14, it passes an oak grove belonging to Reichenschwand Castle. Check route conditions before setting out.
