For a stay in Elchingen, two main themes stand out: monastic heritage and trails through the countryside. The exhibition depot, guided tours of the treasures of the former monastery and various routes offer different ways to plan your time in the area. When looking for a hotel in Elchingen, you can first consider whether cultural events, viewpoints or hiking trails will shape your stay.

Exhibition Depot and Monastic Treasures

The exhibition depot at Klostersteige 13 is open to visitors on the first Friday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. Check the municipality’s latest announcements before your visit. The exhibition depot displays paintings, sculptures, vestments and the 1793 monastery model. Its collection therefore ranges from fine art to liturgical textiles and a historic model; those interested in art or monastic history will find several specific points of interest.

The treasures of the former Elchingen Monastery can be viewed on a guided tour by prior appointment. Check the current arrangements in advance. The exhibition depot has a monthly opening window, while the guided tour requires an appointment in advance.

Hiking Trails and Views

The Panoramic Heights Trail is a six-kilometre loop with open views of the Danube Valley, the Alpine foothills and the Oberelchingen Monastery Church. The Danube-Alb Tour around Elchingen offers a short 10.6-kilometre loop and a longer 15-kilometre option. The Panoramic Heights Trail is therefore shorter than the short loop of the Danube-Alb Tour; the three distances provide a concrete comparison for planning.

On the Danube-Alb Tour, the trail passes through riparian woodland along the Danube, past mighty trees and hidden lakes, then climbs steeply to the escarpment of the Swabian Jura. Along the way, there are views of the Danube Valley and, on clear days, as far as the Alps. Trail conditions can change; check the latest conditions before setting out.

Next to the Oberelchingen Monastery Garden is a viewing platform with an orientation board. From there, the panoramic view extends across the landscape of the Ulmer Winkel; on days with good visibility, the Alps can be seen. This viewpoint offers a distinct experience alongside the longer routes: here, the panoramic view takes centre stage, while the trails offer different distances and landscape impressions.

Other Activities in the Area

The Elchingen indoor swimming pool offers swimming and aqua jogging classes for a fee. If a class might suit your stay, check the latest information with the operator, as availability can change. This means the classes can be considered as a separate activity alongside the hiking trails and cultural visits.

In the wider Neu-Ulm destination

In Neu-Ulm itself, the Edwin Scharff Museum at Petrusplatz houses an art museum and a children’s museum under one roof. The children’s museum offers hands-on and interactive stations where visitors of all ages can take part. The wider Neu-Ulm destination is also home to the Bavarian Bee Museum, where from Easter to October you can observe a queen bee and her court in a glass display case and learn about the life of bees. The two attractions offer different experiences: art and hands-on activities on the one hand, and seasonal bee observation on the other.
