Germering: Market Days, Local History and Leisure
Germering offers several distinct highlights for a stay: the weekly “Green Market,” an annual town festival, local history at the ZEIT+RAUM Museum and outdoor leisure activities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Germering, these themes can help you choose a destination. Consider whether you’d like to plan your stay around a morning at the market, historical topics or outdoor activities. The market and town festival also differ in their schedule: one takes place on two days each week, while the other is held once a year.
Weekly Market and Town Festival
The “Green Market” takes place on Wednesdays from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Volksfestplatz on Kleinfeldstraße. On Saturdays, it is held at the same time at the market square by the Stadthalle, on Untere Bahnhofstraße at the corner of Landsberger Straße. The two market days therefore give you a choice of different locations, with the same opening hours. The offerings include fruit and vegetables, mostly from local sources and organically grown. There are also meat and sausage products, cheese, fish, baked goods, antipasti, dressing and flowers.
The town festival is a different occasion: once a year, Germering and its clubs invite visitors to a three-day festival at Therese-Giehse-Platz in front of the Stadthalle. Unlike the weekly market, a visit depends on the festival dates. Check the town’s events calendar for your preferred date. This lets you plan to include the town festival in your stay without confusing it with the regular market days.
Museum, Walking Routes and Geocaching
The ZEIT+RAUM Museum presents Germering’s history in a permanent exhibition. Original finds illustrate the town’s development. The Museum Walking Routes lead from the museum at the town hall to significant archaeological sites and interesting places connected with Germering’s local history. The exhibition and walking routes have different focuses: the museum centers on Germering’s history, while the routes take you to archaeological sites and places of local history.
The “Journey Through Time in Germering” geocaching tour is based on the Museum Walking Routes and works like a scavenger hunt. You can take the tour on your own or in small groups, such as with your family. This makes it different in format from the permanent exhibition: the tour is designed as a search activity. The archaeological and historical routes can be explored on foot or by bike, and are also suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. This gives you a choice of different formats and ways of getting around when exploring local history.
Outdoor Leisure Activities
The leisure facility on Starnberger Weg has facilities for skateboarders and scooter riders, a pump track for all kinds of non-motorized wheeled vehicles, and a streetball hoop. The pump track is therefore not limited to one type of wheeled vehicle: its description covers all kinds of non-motorized vehicles. The skateboarding and scooter facilities, along with streetball, add other specific ways to get active.
There is an unsupervised bathing area at Germering Lake. Keep this in mind when swimming and take care. The leisure area around the lake also includes the GehölzErlebnisPfad (Woodland Discovery Trail). Its four stations teach visitors about native trees and shrubs. It therefore has a nature-education focus, while swimming is the main activity at the bathing area and the sports facilities mentioned above are the focus of the leisure facility on Starnberger Weg. You can use these different interests to guide your stay without combining them into a single itinerary.
