Waldkraiburg: Discover the City’s History and Museums
Accommodation in Waldkraiburg
Waldkraiburg’s history runs like a common thread through several attractions: the Path of History is laid out as a walking route, while museums and a gallery explore a range of subjects in greater depth. These include the city’s history since the end of the Second World War, industry, glass, art, firefighting history and cultural heritage from the Adlergebirge region. You can therefore choose the focus of your visit based on whether you would rather follow a route through the city or focus on individual collections and exhibition themes.
A walking route through the city’s history
The Path of History passes buildings and places that have been important to Waldkraiburg’s history since the end of the Second World War. At 18 stops, pictures and texts explain the significance of each place. Stops include the House of Culture, the Ölberg, the former fire watchtower, Bunker 29, the bunker church, the old railway station and the former women’s camp. The route is marked throughout the city with yellow-and-blue signposts and ground markings. Check the signs on site in case of temporary changes.
Museums with their own areas of focus
Bunker 29 and the city’s history
Bunker 29, the Waldkraiburg-Aschau Industrial Museum, is housed on Schweidnitzer Weg in a well-preserved original building from the 1940 powder factory. The history of Waldkraiburg and its industry is presented in six rooms. Here, a historic factory building meets the themes of city and industrial history.
An interview at the City Museum
One distinctive feature of the Waldkraiburg City Museum is an original interview with Peter Maffay, in which he recalls his musical beginnings in Waldkraiburg. The artist gave the interview exclusively for the museum. Unlike Bunker 29’s focus on local and industrial history, this exhibit centers on an individual and his musical beginnings in Waldkraiburg.
Local Heritage Room and Glass Museum
The Local Heritage Room, set up as a display collection, presents cultural heritage from the German population of the Adlergebirge region, from around 1900 until their expulsion. The Waldkraiburg Glass Museum displays historic glassware from northern Bohemia. Film footage, photographs, pictures and objects offer insights into glass and its production, as well as the techniques and methods used.
Fire Brigade Museum and gallery
The exhibits at the Bavarian Fire Brigade Museum date back to the 19th century. The Waldkraiburg Municipal Gallery explores diverse aspects of art and culture. It presents thematic and solo exhibitions featuring significant artistic works, including from outside the region and internationally, on current topics and questions. As specific exhibitions may change, check which one is currently on view before visiting.
Mühldorf Am Inn: Town Square and Historic Granaries
The 500-metre-long town square in Mühldorf Am Inn is lined with colourful façades in the Inn-Salzach architectural style. The Salzburg High Fountain in the square was a gift from Salzburg Prince-Archbishop Johannes Ernst von Thun in 1692. Historic buildings also include the two granaries, Haberkasten and Kornkasten, with the courtyard between them. Built as grain stores in the 15th century, the Haberkasten was later converted into a cultural centre.
