Zangberg combines cultural history with named cycling and hiking suggestions. They are spread across the monastery and the districts of Weilkirchen and Palmberg. In Weilkirchen, a house built entirely of wood around 1500, a Baroque church and a tradition dating back to Roman times come together; in Palmberg, the church, a grave and stations of the modern Stations of the Cross take centre stage. This gives you different interests to choose from for your trip: monastic history, churches and buildings, or the tours mentioned in Zangberg.

Monastery and Architectural History in Zangberg

At Zangberg Monastery, the building’s history and its status as a convent go hand in hand: formerly a baronial castle, it has been a convent of the Salesian Sisters since 1862. The Ancestral Hall is considered the most beautiful and magnificent hall in the district. The monastery is occasionally open to visitors for concerts held there. Access is therefore tied to a specific event, while the monastery’s history is shaped by its time as a castle and a convent.

Thurnerhaus and St. George’s Church in Weilkirchen

The district of Weilkirchen is home to the Thurnerhaus, considered the oldest rural residence in the district. It was built entirely of wood around 1500. Behind the Thurnerhaus stands the bell tower of the Baroque Church of St. George; the church is a little farther down the slope. The periods are different: the house, built around 1500, and the Baroque Church of St. George represent different phases of construction. According to tradition, a watchtower stood at the site of the bell tower in Roman times, guarding the Augsburg–Wels Roman road. Weilkirchen thus brings together a wooden house, a church and a story from Roman times as distinct historical references. Together, they give the place a multifaceted character shaped by domestic architecture, church architecture and the tradition of the Roman road.

Church, Views and Stations of the Cross in Palmberg

At the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Palmberg, the landscape, literary history and Stations of the Cross come together. In föhn weather, the view from the church stretches across the Isental valley to the Alps. The grave of writer Martin Greif (1839–1911) lies at its southeast corner. The last two stations of the modern Stations of the Cross stand in front of the church, along the footpath from Ampfing to Palmberg. These offer different points of interest for planning your trip: the view depends on föhn weather, while the grave and Stations of the Cross are located by the church.

Cycling and Hiking Suggestions

If you are comparing tours as a focus for your trip, you can start by distinguishing between three routes that pass through Zangberg: the Schweppermann Tour, the Green Lagoon Tour and the Church Tour. The Village Tour is listed as a hiking suggestion in Zangberg. For cyclists, the planned route from Ampfing to the Tertiary World in Aubenham is a separate option: it passes through Zangberg and was developed by Ernst-Josef Spindler of the Bund Naturschutz. Another route connected with churches is the Mühldorf Church Tour, which passes through Palmberg/Zangberg. Despite their similar names, the Church Tour and the Mühldorf Church Tour are two different routes: the first passes through Zangberg, while the second passes through Palmberg/Zangberg.
