Plankenfels lies on the three rivers Wiesent, Lochau and Truppach. Plankenstein, hiking trails and historic sites offer different focal points for a stay. You can explore the landscape on a signposted route, learn about regional geology or choose individual cultural and historical sites. The sights range from the town of Plankenfels to other places in the municipality.

Rivers and Rocks

At 481 m high, Plankenstein is a distinctive dolomite rock above Plankenfels. The rock attracts hikers with its panoramic views and is also a popular climbing spot. This natural landmark therefore appeals to two different interests: hikers enjoy the views, while climbers come to scale the rock.

Hiking and Geology

The Via Imperialis begins in Plankenfels and follows field, forestry and woodland paths through forests, past viewpoints and across open fields to Muthmannsreuth. The signposted route is 13.5 km long. This gives you a clear starting point, destination and distance to plan around; before setting out, it is a good idea to check the local signs. A detour to Neubürg offers the chance to explore the Neubürg Nature and Art Space.

The Geo-Wanderweg in Plankenfels provides an engaging introduction to regional geology. By comparison, geology is the main focus here, while the Via Imperialis offers a defined 13.5 km route through forests, past viewpoints and across open fields.

Castle and Mill History

Plankenfels Castle and the Eichenmühle near Plankenfels offer different historical highlights. Plankenfels Castle is thought to date back to a castle complex from 1255. The Eichenmühle was a grist and sawmill; it was first mentioned in official records in 1692 and closed in 1955. In terms of chronology, these sites bring together a possibly early castle complex and the documented operation and later closure of a mill. If you are interested in the area’s history, the two places offer different perspectives: a possible castle origin and the history of a specific trade.

Cultural Trails in the Municipality

Beyond the town itself, the municipality offers a distinct perspective on cultural trails. As part of the 2020 ILE regional budget, six cultural hiking trails in and around the municipality of Plankenfels were developed and published in a flyer with information. The Via Imperialis, by contrast, has its explicitly named starting point in Plankenfels and leads to Muthmannsreuth. This distinction is useful for finding your way: the six cultural hiking trails cover the municipality and its surroundings, while the Via Imperialis describes a specific signposted route with a named start and destination.

In Schressendorf, also part of the municipality of Plankenfels, a small chapel stands at the southeastern edge of the village, beside a bench at the edge of the forest. It can be reached via a gravel path. The name of the village helps distinguish its location from the town of Plankenfels, while the Via Imperialis begins specifically in Plankenfels.
