Asbach-Bäumenheim combines several travel themes: the St. Anthony’s Chapel showcases different periods of construction, while a tree trail in Schmutterwald leads visitors to native trees and shrubs. Other attractions include Hamlar Quarry Lake, with its sunbathing lawn and beach volleyball court, and the Via Claudia Augusta cycle route, which passes through the municipality. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Asbach-Bäumenheim, you can plan your trip around whether culture, nature, swimming or a cycling holiday is your priority.

The construction history of St. Anthony’s Chapel

The three-sided, closed choir of St. Anthony’s Chapel in Asbach-Bäumenheim dates back to the 15th century. The nave, whose construction began in 1687, is clearly distinguishable from it. The chapel thus brings together two structural elements with clearly different dates: the choir’s dating and the later start of construction on the nave. For a culture-focused stay, the chapel offers a tangible glimpse into different periods of its construction history.

Nature, the cycle route and the quarry lake

The tree trail in Schmutterwald invites visitors to learn about native trees and shrubs, with a focus on the variety of local woody plants. Hamlar Quarry Lake is a swimming lake with a sunbathing lawn and beach volleyball court; swimming, relaxing on the lawn and beach volleyball are the leisure activities specifically mentioned here. Separately, the Via Claudia Augusta cycle route passes through the municipality of Asbach-Bäumenheim, making it another local point of interest for cyclists. The three offerings have different focuses: learning about woody plants, leisure time at a swimming lake and a cycle route through the municipality.

A historic site in the surrounding area

In the area around the destination, south of Mertingen, lies the former Roman fort of Burghöfe, also known as Submuntorium. It is situated on a protected spur of land. This makes the historic site a separate point of interest in the surrounding area, while St. Anthony’s Chapel, the tree trail and the quarry lake are directly associated with Asbach-Bäumenheim.

Donau-Ries as the wider destination

The wider Donau-Ries destination includes the Ries Geopark and the Ries Crater, which was formed by a meteorite impact and is described by the Donau-Ries district as a tourist attraction. Nördlingen’s medieval town wall is completely intact and fully accessible. The town museum in Nördlingen covers the lives and beliefs of the people who lived there, the changes of the Reformation era, the Thirty Years’ War and the 1634 Battle of Nördlingen. Its collection, which is more than 150 years old, spans four floors. A model made of around 6,000 tin figures depicts the 1634 battle.

The RiesKraterMuseum focuses on the asteroid impact that created the Nördlinger Ries, as well as its cosmic origins and effects that continue to this day. The exhibition includes meteorites, fossils, a piece of genuine moon rock, information panels and multimedia offerings. The subject is presented in a carefully renovated medieval barn dating from 1503. The Kühstein Geopark trail offers a different way to learn about geology: eight interpretive panels explain the processes involved in the meteorite impact 14.5 million years ago. From Buchberg, visitors can enjoy a panorama of the Ries and its inner and outer crater rims.
