Is St. Gallus, hiking, or both your main focus? Two local themes sit side by side: church architecture and hiking opportunities in and around the town. Then compare hotel offers based on your travel dates and the conditions and services that matter to you.

Church and hiking in Fremdingen

The neo-Gothic parish church of St. Gallus impresses with its architectural style. This gives Fremdingen a distinct architectural theme alongside its hiking opportunities. If you are interested in churches and architectural styles, you can include this cultural highlight in your travel plans and decide how much weight to give it, whether or not hiking is also part of your plans.

There are many hiking opportunities in and around Fremdingen, leading to rest and play areas, viewpoints, and small lakes. These destinations appeal to different interests: rest and play areas offer places to pause and play, viewpoints draw your gaze to the landscape, and small lakes provide another type of destination. When planning your day, you can therefore decide whether to focus more on scenic views, places to take a break, or lakes.

If both matter to you, you can include both themes in your plans. This way, your choice reflects your specific plans.

Donau-Ries: geology, history, and pilgrimage

The wider travel destination of Donau-Ries offers its own range of regional themes. The Donau-Ries district describes the Geopark Ries, with the Ries Crater formed by a meteorite impact, as a tourist attraction. At eight information panels, the KĂĽhstein Geopark educational trail explains the processes involved in the impact 14.5 million years ago. From Buchberg, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Ries and its inner and outer crater rims. The panels explain the geological process, while the viewpoint looks out over the crater landscape.

Nördlingen’s fully preserved and entirely accessible medieval town wall is a distinctive part of the region’s history. The town museum displays a collection more than 150 years old across four floors. Its exhibits cover life and faith in Nördlingen, the changes of the Reformation era, the Thirty Years’ War, and the 1634 Battle of Nördlingen. A model featuring around 6,000 tin figures depicts the battle. Together, the wall and museum offer different perspectives: the preserved townscape and the history of a specific event.

The pilgrimage basilica of Maria BrĂĽnnlein in Wemding also brings together architectural history and religious art. The Rococo church was built between 1748 and 1782 to plans by Franz Joseph Roth, as the flow of pilgrims grew. Its altar of grace is designed as a fountain altar and includes the miraculous Madonna by Johann Joseph Mayr, dating from 1755. Ernst Steinacker created the altar table with its fountain basin in 1953. Around 150,000 pilgrims visit the basilica each year. Alongside geology and urban history, Donau-Ries thus offers pilgrimage, with its own architectural and decorative history, as a distinct theme.
