Kälberstein Chapel is part of the Kälberstein theme; the combined walking and cycling path between Bischofswiesen and Berchtesgaden ends in Stanggaß. This makes it possible to distinguish between excursions on foot and continuing by bike when planning.

Kälberstein Chapel and the Summit

Kälberstein Chapel is one of the places associated with Stanggaß. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built in 1882 in the Neo-Romanesque style, and stands on the summit of Kälberstein at an elevation of 789 metres. For those interested in culture, the dedication to Mary, the year of construction and the Neo-Romanesque design are the main points of interest; its summit location also places the chapel within the Kälberstein theme.

Plan Hiking and Cycling Separately

The Kälberstein area, with its ski jump and chapel, is a hiking destination. Several trails lead to Kälberstein from Aschauerweiher or Berchtesgaden; the area is also a destination for a winter walk. Seasonal conditions can affect access, so check conditions before setting out. The combined walking and cycling path between Bischofswiesen and Berchtesgaden is a separate route: it ends in Stanggaß. Cyclists continuing towards Berchtesgaden must use State Road 2097. As the route may change due to infrastructure work, check its course locally before setting off on a bike ride.

In the Wider Bischofswiesen Destination

Bischofswiesen also offers its own cultural attractions. The Maria Hilf pilgrimage church was completed in 1798/99 and is the oldest church in Bischofswiesen. It is located in the high-altitude district of Loipl. The Church of Creation in Bischofswiesen features a different architectural design: its wooden beam structure extends far into the church interior. It is complemented by wooden picture panels in warm colours, created in 2008 by Schönau artist Christoph Merker. Maria Hilf can thus be characterised by its construction period and age, while the Church of Creation is distinguished by its interior structure and picture panels.

Bischofswiesen also offers different ways to experience the landscape. From the viewpoint at Kastensteinerwand, the view stretches to the Watzmann. Böcklmoos is in the Strub district of Bischofswiesen and, together with the neighbouring Dachlmoos, is considered the largest and best-preserved raised bog in the Berchtesgaden Alps. The viewpoint and the bog represent different landscape themes: a view of the Watzmann and a raised bog considered together with its neighbouring area.

Further ideas include play and winter sports. The adventure playground by the school in Bischofswiesen has playhouses, a climbing net, a swing, a balance course and water features. At the Aschauerweiher cross-country skiing centre, the stadium loop is covered with machine-made snow when weather conditions permit and is floodlit from Tuesday to Thursday until around 8 pm. The Götschen ski area serves as a training and competition venue for elite sport and also as a family ski area for locals and visitors. Götschen Ski School offers professional ski and snowboard lessons; confirm current availability directly.
