Discover Donauwörth
Accommodation in Donauwörth
Donauwörth lies on the well-known Romantic Road holiday route and at the confluence of the Danube and Wörnitz rivers. You’ll also encounter riverbanks, the promenade and the Old Danube Harbour on the “Little Green Walk.” The destinations vary in focus and time required, allowing you to plan your days around your interests and the time available.
Walks between rivers and riverbanks
The “Little Green Walk” is a 4.5 km nature tour through various natural landscapes in the heart of Donauwörth. It takes approximately 50 to 60 minutes. The route follows the Donauwörth Promenade, passes through the picturesque Heilig-Kreuz-Garten, and runs alongside the rivers and the banks of the Old Danube Harbour. This circuit therefore combines natural areas with the urban environment and the water. The historic site of the Old Danube Harbour has been revitalized and features a riverside promenade, benches and picnic areas where you can relax by the water. When planning your time, you can use the estimated duration provided as a guide; check the current route description before setting out.
Explore the city’s history at your own pace
The “Little Historical Walk” takes you on a self-guided tour through the history of the former Free Imperial City of Donauwörth and past its many sights. Its focus is therefore different from that of the nature tour: the city’s historical development is at the heart of this walk. If you prefer a guided perspective, there are more than 20 city, tower and themed tours to choose from. The two formats differ mainly in whether you take the walk independently or opt for a guided tour. As the visitor program may change, it is advisable to check the current offerings in advance.
Heilig Kreuz: architecture and pilgrimage
Heilig Kreuz is a late Baroque pilgrimage church in an impressive monastery complex. Its features include magnificent stucco work in the Wessobrunn style by Franz Schmuzer. The history of pilgrimage is also closely tied to the site: original relics of the Cross, brought from Constantinople to Donauwörth in 1030, are kept in the crypt chapel. Here, the history of architecture and the church’s traditional religious significance come together. For visitors interested in religious buildings, Heilig Kreuz offers a specific place to visit with art-historical and historical significance.
Carillon and Käthe Kruse Doll Museum
Since 1986, the “Donauwörth Carillon” has sounded daily at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from the west gable of the town hall. If you’d like to include this set time in your city walk, check the current schedule as a precaution. The Käthe Kruse Doll Museum’s permanent exhibition features more than 150 dolls, window mannequins and dolls from dollhouses made by Käthe Kruse’s workshop. The exhibition spans the period from the beginnings around 1910 to the present day. A free children’s quiz trail is also available at the museum ticket desk; children’s birthday parties, as well as guided tours and family tours, can be booked. It is worth checking the latest details of these offerings before your visit.
The Lech–Danube cycling circuit
For a longer outing, the 67 km Lech–Danube cycling circuit is another option. In principle, you can start the circuit anywhere. The tour described starts and ends in Donauwörth; initially, it heads out of town along the cycle path running parallel to the Danube. This makes it possible to combine your local stay with a longer bike ride without treating the city walk and the circuit as the same activity. If you plan to ride the circuit, check the current route description and any possible changes before setting off.
