In Lehen, you can explore two different hiking routes. Here, the Gläserner Steig leads into the extensive forests of the Bavarian-Bohemian mountain range, initially following small paths. The Gunthersteig passes through Lehen and continues as a cross-border route from Niederalteich Monastery on the Danube to Dobrá Voda in Bohemia.

Hiking in Lehen: Gläserner Steig and Gunthersteig

On the Gläserner Steig, the small paths at the beginning and the transition into the extensive mountain forests set the scene for the section around Lehen. The Gunthersteig, by contrast, is notable both for its route through the village and for its long course across the border. When planning, you can consider which of these two routes interests you most.

One specific section of the Gunthersteig runs from the Lehen district via Oberlindbergmühle along a gravel path through a wooded area to Spiegelhütte. From Lehen, the Gunthersteig passes through the forest via Spiegelhütte into Bavarian Forest National Park. The details about the gravel path, wooded area and destination make this section of the route tangible, while the stretch from Niederalteich to Dobrá Voda shows its wider regional scope.

Hiking and culture in the wider destination of Lindberg

In the wider destination of Lindberg, you can choose between two hikes with different lengths and routes. The easy circular trail “Through the Sea of Leaves in Lindberg” runs for 8 km around Riesberg. The “Hiking by Train” hike is about 12 km long as far as Bayerisch Eisenstein and includes gentle ascents. It starts at Lindberg Town Hall and leads along Kramerstraße and the panoramic circular trail, marked in red as route no. 14, to the glassmakers’ houses in Theresienthal. From there, it follows the historic Böhmweg along the railway line to Ludwigsthal. You can compare a circular route around Riesberg with a longer hike that includes several named stops.

The Lindberg Farmhouse Museum offers a glimpse into rural life in times gone by. Built using timber construction, the main house was first mentioned in official records in 1575 and is probably older; the complex also includes a retirement house. Together with one of the last wooden chapels in the Bavarian Forest, the museum conveys a picture of rural life in earlier times. The museum also has a glass bell in the chapel tower and a collection of death boards. Buchenau Castle was built by Benedikt von Poschinger in 1840 and later expanded.

In summer, a 300-meter-long hiking trail runs through the red deer enclosure near Scheuereck. Two viewing platforms with seating areas bring observation points close to the animals; the trail is closed during the rutting season and in winter. A covered viewing shelter at the winter feeding station makes it possible to observe red deer against a natural forest backdrop, even in bad weather.

A traditional Bohemian Watt card tournament hosted by the EV Lehen ice-stock club drew numerous card-game enthusiasts to the Gasthof Bauer in Lindberg; this was reported on 25 March 2026.
