Lalling’s hiking routes vary considerably in length and route: the selection ranges from a 1.2-kilometre circular trail to long-distance hiking routes with a single stage or a total route spanning several places. The local attractions also include a Kneipp facility and a cultural highlight in the parish church of St. Stephen.

Kneipp Facility and Nature Discovery Trail

Opened in 1985, the Lalling Kneipp facility consists of a water-treading basin, an arm basin, several benches and a covered rest area. The 1.2-kilometre nature discovery trail in the Feng Shui Kurpark is a short circular route through Jägerhölzl and Ahornweg that ends at the Kneipp facility. The Steinbruchsteig and the nature discovery trail pass close to the facility and can be combined with a Kneipp session. If you plan to visit the facility, check current access arrangements in advance, as these may change.

The nature discovery trail connects the loop through Jägerhölzl and Ahornweg with a finishing point at the Kneipp facility. This distinguishes its route from the other two circular hiking trails described here: the Frohnmühlenweg returns to the village, while the Steinbruchsteig follows a larger loop with several named stops. You can compare the trails by length and route without treating them as equivalent tours.

Circular Hikes of Different Lengths

The approximately 3-kilometre FrohnmĂĽhlenweg starts in the centre of Lalling, passes through Ranzing and FrohnmĂĽhle, and returns to Lalling. It is described as very easy and is suitable for winter hikes. At approximately this length, it falls between the nature discovery trail and the longer Steinbruchsteig. You can therefore first distinguish the circular trails by how much time they take; the stated distances provide a concrete basis for comparison.

The Steinbruchsteig is an approximately 7.5-kilometre educational trail in the form of a circular hike. From Lalling, it passes through Feng Shui Park and Euschertsfurth, goes by a 600-year-old lime tree, and returns to Lalling. Its loop is longer than the two shorter trails. Winter conditions also differ: while the FrohnmĂĽhlenweg is suitable for winter hikes, the Steinbruchsteig is only partly accessible in winter. This limitation should be taken into account when planning the hike.

Long-Distance Hiking Routes to and Through Lalling

Stage S 18 of the Goldsteig South Route is a 16-kilometre quality long-distance hiking trail from Landshuter Haus to Lalling. Its route passes through Rusel, Datting, Kapfing and Gerholling-Dösing. The Gunthersteig, by contrast, is a long-distance hiking and pilgrimage route approximately 88 kilometres in total: it runs from Niederalteich via Lalling, Richnach, Lindberg, Spiegelhütte and Scheuereck to Dobrá Voda in the Czech Republic. The two distances refer to different sections: 16 kilometres is the length of stage S 18, while approximately 88 kilometres describes the entire Gunthersteig. This helps distinguish stage length from total route distance when planning your hike.

Church and Regional Landscape

The parish church of St. Stephen in Lalling houses a Gothic Madonna known as the Turkish Madonna. It adds a specific cultural detail about the village to the landscape and hiking themes.

In the wider destination of Deggendorf, the Deggendorf region stretches from the heights of the Bavarian Forest, across the Danube landscape with the Isar’s confluence, to the rich colours of the Gäuboden. It lies between 200 and 1,150 metres above sea level. The castle ruins of Natternberg and Winzer also offer their own regional perspectives: the Natternberg castle ruins can be reached by footpaths from three sides, and from there the view extends far across the Gäuboden and into the Bavarian Forest. The Winzer castle ruins offer a magnificent view of the Danube Valley.
