For planning a trip to Plattling, there are two clear perspectives to consider: the city’s history and buildings, and cycling tours along the Isar Cycle Path. Public art and practical information for getting there round out the picture. This can help you decide whether to focus your stay more on cultural sites or on cycling. Plattling station is served by ICE trains; check the timetable for suitable connections on your travel dates.

City History and Buildings

Johann Conrad Graf von Preysing-Lichtenegg-Moos was named an honorary citizen of Plattling in 1901. The monument, unveiled on July 9, 1907, was melted down during the war; since 1983, the Preysing Monument has once again stood in front of the town hall, commemorating the city’s benefactor. This stop links the honor with the history of the monument’s loss and restoration.

More than 300 exhibits are spread across two buildings at the St. John of Nepomuk Museum. Sculptures, pictures, documents, historical sources and prayer texts explore St. John of Nepomuk, as well as the history of Plattling and the St. John of Nepomuk Association. The collection thus brings together different types of objects with local and association history.

St. James’s Cemetery Church also brings together different historical periods: it is Romanesque, and the present building was probably constructed in the third quarter of the 12th century. The church also houses an altarpiece with wings from the 16th century. The building’s presumed date of construction and a much later-dated furnishing stand side by side.

The Bürgerspital has stood on Ludwigplatz in the city center since the second half of the 19th century. Its characteristic Neo-Gothic façade provides a different architectural accent from the Romanesque cemetery church. In Plattling, you can include buildings with different historical and stylistic associations in your sightseeing plans.

Cycling and Getting Around

Plattling is a starting point for cycling tours, with mostly flat cycle paths and access to the 299-kilometer Isar Cycle Path. The Isar Cycle Path is signposted throughout Plattling. This distance refers to the length of the cycle path; choose the section that suits your specific tour. A cycling map and further information about the Isar Cycle Path are available at the information stand in the BĂĽrgerspital.

When planning a cycling tour, you can consider several aspects separately: Plattling as a starting point, the mostly flat cycle paths, and the Isar Cycle Path signage in town. The map and information at the stand in the BĂĽrgerspital offer another point of reference for finding your way. Bear in mind that the paths are described as mostly, not entirely, flat.

Art and Other Highlights

Artworks in Plattling’s public spaces are presented along the Nibelungen Mile. This art feature differs from the historic buildings and the museum collection: here, the focus is on artworks in the cityscape.

A guided tour of the town square shares stories and background information about the city’s development and its historic buildings. If you would like to include this way of exploring the city’s history in your stay, check in advance for a date and whether the tour can be booked.

At the top of the water tower, a walkway about two meters wide offers views across the city. Check access before your visit if you want to make the tower a firm part of your itinerary. Canoeists train at the Isar wave; canoeing is also one of the activities that shape Plattling’s recreational offerings.
