You can get to know Kaikenried on a trip by exploring specific destinations along its trails and local traditions. Highlights include a circular trail to the Berlin Cross, the Forest Chapel Trail and the annual Christkindlmarkt. There are also hiking routes in the wider destination of Teisnach, which can be assessed using their own route details and destinations.

Trail destinations in Kaikenried

The 3.2 km circular trail to the 5 m-high Berlin Cross starts and ends at the Platzl in Kaikenried. Along the way, it offers a view of the village from above. Its length, shared start and end point, and named destination give you clear points of reference when choosing a route. The trail between Teisnach and Kaikenried passes through the forest nature trail and Bärmannsried.

The Forest Chapel Trail leads to a forest chapel built 150 years ago. Unlike the Berlin Cross, its main destination is a historic building; by contrast, the 3.2 km circular trail is defined by its set length and the view of the village from above. This lets you choose between a scenic viewpoint and a destination with a historic construction date.

Christkindlmarkt and local traditions

The village associations hold the Kaikenried Christkindlmarkt every year on the last weekend of Advent before Christmas. The market is therefore a seasonal reason to visit.

The Christkindlmarkt offers locally brewed beer, punch and liqueurs, as well as waffles, bread, Gselchtes (smoked meat) and Sengzelten (a local flatbread). There are also fire sausages, grilled sausages and hot horse sausages. The selection ranges from drinks and baked goods to hearty dishes; the specific offerings from individual vendors may vary from year to year.

The Wolfausläuten tradition has been observed in Kaikenried since 9 November 1978. This date marks when the local tradition began; it is not the annual date of the Christkindlmarkt. The market takes place on the last weekend of Advent before Christmas. If you are travelling specifically for the market, check the exact date for that year.

Teisnach in the regional context

Teisnach is in the Donau-Wald region and the Bavarian Forest Nature Park, at the confluence of the Teisnach River and the Schwarzer Regen. The Pfahl runs through part of the municipality of Teisnach.

Two Teisnach routes are similar in length. The signposted hiking trail from Teisnach to Ayrhof passes through Fernsdorf and is 6.0 km long. Bayerisch Kanada is slightly longer at 6.5 km; it runs from the Waldbahn stop in Gumpenried to Teisnach station and takes about two hours.

Another option is the section of the riverside hiking trail from Gumpenried to Teisnach, or in the opposite direction. It is family-friendly and suitable for less experienced hikers, too. Teisnach is very well connected to the regional road network via the B11 and B85 federal highways.
