Blossersberg: Listed Former Farmstead and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Blossersberg
Blossersberg combines local history with hiking routes that vary in length and character. A listed former isolated farmstead provides a tangible architectural landmark; on its return leg, the 13-kilometre Viechtach–Neunußberg circular hiking trail passes through the district. When choosing a route, it is also worth comparing it with the easy, approximately 6-kilometre “Short Loop to the Schwarzer Regen” near Viechtach.
A Listed Farmstead in Blossersberg
The former isolated farmstead at Moosleuthen 7 in the Viechtach district of Blossersberg is listed; the district documented this status in 2023. The state monument-list description dated 5 February 2026 identifies the property as a Waldlerhaus-style residential-and-barn house with a barn adjoining at a right angle. This names both the building type and the barn’s arrangement: the residential-and-barn house and the barn are the defining features of the described farmstead.
To understand the architectural form, it is helpful to consider the terms separately: “residential-and-barn house” and “Waldlerhaus style” characterize the house, while the right angle describes its connection to the barn. In this way, Blossersberg’s local history links a specific address with a precisely identified historic building type.
Hiking: Different Routes and Highlights
The 13 km Viechtach–Neunußberg circular hiking trail is of moderate difficulty and marked in red with No. 4. On the return leg, it passes through the district of Blossersberg and offers another lovely view of Viechtach. The distance, stated difficulty level and trail marking give you specific points of reference for planning your hike.
The “Short Loop to the Schwarzer Regen” is an easy, approximately 6 km circuit along the Schwarzer Regen near Viechtach. It leads to the road to Blossersberg and then returns to the starting point at Viechtach railway station via Bahnhofstraße. The two routes therefore compare at approximately 6 km and 13 km; the longer one is explicitly described as moderately difficult, while the shorter one is described as easy.
The “Short Loop to the Schwarzer Regen” is accessible by public transport. Check current connections when planning your journey. Before setting out on either route, also check the current trail route and conditions.
Höllensteinsee: Formation, Boat Trips and Fishing
Höllensteinsee was formed between 1923 and 1926 during the construction of the Höllenstein power plant. The Schwarzer Regen was dammed over a length of 5.6 km to generate electricity. This history connects a clearly specified construction period with the use of the river to produce energy.
Boat trips are offered on Höllensteinsee through the surrounding woodland. Fishing on the lake is possible from May to November. Fishing permits for the Schwarzer Regen, from the Rugenmühl Bridge to the dam at Höllensteinsee, are available, among other places, from the Viechtach Tourist Information Office; a valid annual fishing licence is required. Check the applicable regulations before fishing, as fishing rules may change.
Restaurants and Historic Cellars
The origins of a restaurant at the boundary between Viechtach and what is now the district of Blossersberg can be traced back to the 19th century. The historic Blossersberg cellar had a small hall where weddings were celebrated and theatre was performed. On the Blossersberg side of the Schwarzer Regen there were also historic storage cellars belonging to Viechtach’s breweries and inns, including the cellars of Kreutzberger and Schmaus. Taken together, these details show different aspects of local life in the past: social gatherings and storage.
As a landmark in the surrounding area, the Autochthonous Plant Nursery lies in the direction of Schönau near Plöß when travelling from Blossersberg, diagonally opposite the “Gläserne Scheune”.
Viechtach: Culture and Cycling
In Viechtach itself, the Old Town Hall dates from 1542; the second floor houses a permanent exhibition on the Großer Pfahl nature reserve. St. Augustine’s Parish Church in Viechtach features Rococo decoration, including stucco work on the ceilings and walls, garlands of roses and rocaille ornamentation.
The Viechtach Local History Museum focuses on three themes: Viechtach in old views, images and symbols of popular piety, and linen processing in earlier times. The Viechtach Environmental Education Centre aims to provide environmental education for all age groups. For cyclists, the 162-kilometre Regental Cycle Route between Regensburg and Bayerisch Eisenstein passes directly through Viechtach.
