Arberg lies between Dennenloher See and Altmühlsee. To get your bearings, consider both the market town itself and the wider municipal area: buildings and the Zimmermann art studio are associated with Arberg, while the Limes runs through the districts of Groß- and Kleinlellenfeld. If you are looking for a hotel in Arberg, these different local connections can help you decide which cultural focus to give your stay.

The history of the Limes in the municipal area

In the municipal area of Arberg, the Limes runs from Dennenloher See through the districts of Groß- and Kleinlellenfeld to the district boundary east of Kleinlellenfeld. At the eastern edge of Kleinlellenfeld, watchtower 13/41 and part of the Limes wall were reconstructed to knee height in 2007. The site is on the Limes hiking and cycling trail; an information stele about the Limes, designed by Römerpark Ruffenhofen, is located there. This offers two distinct perspectives on the Roman frontier and its reconstruction: the route reveals its geographical context in the municipal area, while the site identifies a specific place with a reconstructed watchtower, a section of wall and an information panel.

Architectural history and art in Arberg

In the market town of Arberg itself, the Holy Cross cemetery church and the historic gate tower mark two specific points in history. The church was built in 1586; the gate tower dates from 1531 and was designed according to plans by Gabriel de Gabrieli. The gate tower is therefore the older of the two dated buildings; in its case, the year is complemented by the fact that it was designed according to Gabriel de Gabrieli's plans.

The Zimmermann art studio complements these historical themes with visual art. The studios and gallery display artworks by Reinhard Zimmermann and bronze sculptures by Elke Zimmermann. If you would like to include this place in your plans, check visiting arrangements in advance.

In Wolframs-Eschenbach, the 2.2-kilometre-long Literaturweg Franken is an accessible circular trail around the town fortifications. Its 15 information panels focus on authors from the Middle Ages to the present day whose works explore Franconia. The concise route description and literary theme give the circular trail its own distinctive focus.

The “wiegen & messen” (Weighing & Measuring) Museum in Königshofen displays more than 4,000 exhibits. These include historic scales and their corresponding weights, cubits, folding rulers, and vessels for measuring grain. The focus here is on historic measuring instruments and their various forms.

In Feuchtwangen, the Romanesque cloister brings together architectural and theatre history. It is an important testament to the early history of the monastery and was built as part of the Salvatorkloster, whose structural core can be traced back to the 12th century. Since 1949, the cloister has served as a venue for the Feuchtwanger Kreuzgangspiele; its Romanesque arcades provide an open-air theatre space. The annual programmes may vary.
