Halblech: Hiking Trails, Lakes and Kenzen Hut
Accommodation in Halblech
Halblech offers a variety of destinations for a stay: hiking trails, viewpoints, lakes and Kenzen Hut in the Ammergebirge Nature Reserve.
Lakes and Scenery in Halblech
Bannwaldsee lies at the foot of the Ammergebirge and is almost entirely surrounded by reed beds and marsh meadows. There are nesting sites for rare bird species in the surrounding area; the lake and its surroundings are in a nature reserve.
Hegratsrieder See is a small bathing lake near the Halblech district of Greith. Wankerfleck offers a different kind of scenery: the high-altitude pasture is dotted with many ancient maple trees and offers views of the distinctive peak of Geiselstein.
Bockstallsee lies on the hiking trail through Lobental to Kenzen Hut, just before the Wankerfleck high-altitude pasture. Their locations along this trail help you place the two sites in relation to one another.
Hiking Destinations and Planning Your Time
The Buchenbergbahn is a double-chairlift in the Halblech district of Buching and takes you up to an elevation of 1,142 meters. From there, you can see across the valley around Forggensee and spot eleven other lakes. The Bachweg trail takes you to Buchenbergalm on Buchenberg in about an hour; from there, you can also enjoy views across the valley and its many lakes.
The first stage of the Himmelsstürmer Route on the Allgäu Hiking Trilogy begins at the Kenzen car park. It leads through Röthenbachtal, past Bockstallsee and Wankerfleck, and on to Kenzen Hut. Another option is the four-hour Panoramaschleife: it starts at the Kenzen car park in Halblech, goes via Mariengrotte to Trauchgau, and returns to the starting point via the St. Peter viewpoint. For planning your time, the approximately one-hour walk to Buchenbergalm and the four-hour loop are two different tour options.
The long-distance hiking trails Allgäu Hiking Trilogy, King Ludwig Way, Lechhöhenweg, Maximiliansweg and Via Alpina also pass through Halblech. The municipality’s hiking network comprises 200 kilometers of well-marked trails: 80 kilometers in the valley and 120 kilometers in the mountains.
Kenzen Hut and Local History
Kenzen Hut is located at an elevation of 1,300 meters in the Ammergebirge Nature Reserve and is a popular destination in Halblech. You can reach it by hiking bus, or alternatively by mountain bike or on foot along an easy trail. If you plan to take the hiking bus, check the current timetable in advance. The hut serves regional specialties.
The production of whetstones is also part of Halblech’s history: special limestone slabs were quarried there and used to make whetstones.
A Buching livestock market was held at the festival grounds in Buching on September 21, 2026. The market included a traders’ market, a festival tent with brass band music, and the sale of decorated livestock. The livestock parade was accompanied by outriders and the Buching brass band.
