Aitrang offers two distinct focal points for planning a trip: the Sagenhafter Weg and the architectural and art history of the churches in the municipality. St. Ulrich Parish Church brings together building phases dating from the 15th to the 19th century and works of art from the 20th century. If you are looking for hotels for a trip to Aitrang, these themes can help you plan your stay around your interests.

The Sagenhafter Weg: a circular route and legends of the Ostallgäu

The Aitrang route of the Sagenhafter Weg starts and ends in Aitrang. It passes through Krähberg, Görwangs, Münzenried, Huttenwang and Wenglingen. Aitrang is therefore both the starting point and the return point of the loop, whose course is shaped by the places mentioned.

Along the route, legends and lore of the Ostallgäu are presented through information boards, texts and life-size legendary figures. The boards and texts supplement the figures with additional ways of sharing these stories. The four-part Sagenhafter Weg network also includes playgrounds and rest areas as family-friendly features for outings.

About 96 percent of the route is on asphalt and about 4 percent on gravel farm and forestry roads. Asphalt is therefore clearly the main surface, although the loop also includes gravel sections. Check the route conditions before setting out, as maintenance may change the condition of individual sections.

Church architecture and art in Aitrang

The Catholic parish church of St. Ulrich is located at Lindenstraße 42 in Aitrang. Its choir dates from around 1466 and was raised in 1683/84; the nave was rebuilt in 1867/68. The church thus shows distinct building phases from different periods: the choir dates back to the 15th century, while the nave was rebuilt in the 19th century.

The artistic furnishings also date from later years. The nave contains a large fresco by Ludwig Magnus Hotter from 1956. The side walls feature wooden reliefs dating from 1973, depicting scenes from the lives of St. Joseph and St. Mary. In addition to its architectural history, the church is home to two dated works of 20th-century art that shape different areas of the building.

Churches and chapels in the municipality

In Görwangs, a locality within the municipality of Aitrang, the pilgrimage church of St. Alban is located at Görwangs 14, 87648 Aitrang. It is a hall church with a narrower choir and a three-sided apse. The building was constructed from 1697 to 1701, probably incorporating parts of the choir walls of an earlier building from 1510. The roof turret was renewed in 1896. Its architectural history thus combines a clearly dated construction phase with the possible incorporation of older building elements.

Two chapels in the municipality provide further chronological landmarks: the Catholic Chapel of St. Magnus in Neuenried was built in 1694, and its roof structure was renewed in 1861. The Catholic Chapel of St. Rosina in Wenglingen was built after 1700. Together with the building phases and artworks at St. Ulrich, these churches and chapels offer a variety of starting points for a stay focused on Aitrang’s ecclesiastical architectural history.
