Bidingen: Churches, Calvary Hill and the Sagenhafter Weg
Accommodation in Bidingen
In Bidingen, sacred architectural history, a route featuring legends, and seasonal winter activities offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can help you choose a destination that suits your travel interests: from chapels and church architecture to the Sagenhafter Weg and the local ski lift.
Churches and Calvaries
The Catholic Calvary Chapel on Kalvariberg in Weiler is a furnished rotunda with a domed roof, lantern and articulated walls. It was built by Johann Georg Fischer in 1729/30. The parish church of St. Pankratius in Bidingen has a Gothic core dating from 1426. The nave frescoes were painted by Johann Georg Wolcker of Augsburg in 1738. The stucco work was made by Joseph and Franz Xaver Schmuzer, who are described as Wessobrunner. The Gothic core and the frescoes provide two specific dates in the church’s history; the attribution of the stucco adds an art-and-craft detail.
The Calvary in Bidingen is distinct from Kalvariberg in Weiler. Today, devotions and baptisms take place there, as does a blessing of herbs on the Feast of the Assumption. The dates and times of individual services may vary.
Sagenhafter Weg: Legends, surfaces and orientation
The Sagenhafter Weg – Route Bidingen presents myths through information boards, texts and life-size legendary figures. Its surface is approximately 96 percent asphalt and 4 percent gravel farm and forest roads. This approximate breakdown gives a concrete impression of the route’s surface. Traveling clockwise is recommended; parking is available at the multi-purpose hall in Bidingen.
The route’s connections are also specified: From Bernbach via Gennachsäge, the Sagenhafter Weg – Route Bidingen connects to the “Biessenhofen” route. When planning, you can therefore take into account both the recommended direction and the stated route connections. The stories, mix of surfaces and wayfinding are different aspects of this route.
Dachssee and seasonal winter activities
Dachssee is a remnant of a lake that formed in the landscape of today’s Bidingen municipality after the last Ice Age. It therefore points to a much earlier landscape history than the construction dates of the parish church and chapel.
Bidingen has a local ski lift called Skilift Bidingen; it operates seasonally. If you plan to use it during your trip, check its current operating status. On February 21, 2026, the approximately 4-kilometer trail in Bidingen had been groomed for both classic and freestyle (skating) techniques, but was also listed as impassable. This information refers to the date specified. If you are visiting on another date, check the trail’s current status.
Ostallgäu as the wider travel destination
In the wider Ostallgäu travel destination, the mountains in the southwest of the district are part of the Vilser Gebirge, and those in the southeast belong to the Ammergebirge. At 2,082 meters, Hochplatte is the highest mountain in Ostallgäu. Since July 12, 2025, Neuschwanstein Castle, together with Linderhof Palace, the King’s House on Schachen and Herrenchiemsee Palace, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau can only be visited as part of a guided tour.
For cycling and hiking, the Ostallgäu Cycling Travel Region includes regional routes that extend across the entire Ostallgäu. Each is 25 to 76 kilometers long, consistently signposted and has its own theme. There are also 32 local hiking routes that showcase special natural and local treasures. These regional routes form a separate area of interest alongside the Sagenhafter Weg – Route Bidingen.
The wider travel destination also includes Forggensee: At more than 15 km², it is Bavaria’s fifth-largest lake and Germany’s largest reservoir. The Forggensee Cycle Route runs around the lake. Forggensee boat trips operate regularly during the summer season; if you plan to take one, it is worth checking the timetable in advance.
