Discover Murg on several scales: in the landscapes of Thimos, on two Nordic walking loops, along the Murgtal Trail and at historic buildings. If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Murg, the different themes and route distances give you a concrete basis for prioritizing your activities. The themes range from loops with stated distances to a regional cycling route and architectural history.

Thimos: landscape and views

Thimos is a popular recreational area with a rich diversity of species. Biotopes connect fishponds, irrigated meadows and meadow ditches. This mosaic of water and meadow habitats is a distinctive feature of the landscape. Thimos also offers beautiful views of the Swiss Jura. Information boards along the Thimos nature trail explain hedgerows, ponds and woodland edges as habitats, as well as the history of the Thimoshof.

Comparing the Nordic walking loops

Two loop routes towards Murg-Oberhof can be distinguished by their distances and elevation differences. Both start at the northern edge of the village. The blue route is about 5.5 kilometres long with an elevation difference of 130 metres; the black route is about 7.6 kilometres long with an elevation difference of 210 metres. These figures provide a concrete point of comparison when choosing between the two. The black route is longer and has a greater elevation difference; the blue route has lower figures. This lets you compare the extent of each tour using the stated measurements.

The Murgtal Trail and its loop walks

The Murgtal Trail is on a different scale from the Nordic walking loops: it is 27 kilometres long and runs from its source in Herrischried to its mouth at the Rhine near Murg. The newly redesigned route opened in 2025. The Murgtal Trail also includes six signposted circular walks for families, each 5 to 11 kilometres long. The 27 kilometres refers to the Murgtal Trail, while the range of 5 to 11 kilometres refers to the six circular walks. The trail provides information on natural history, historical and current topics in the region.

Architectural history in Murg

The Zechenwihler Hotzenhaus in Murg-Niederhof dates from 1748. It is a typical Black Forest house with a ridge-post construction, a hipped roof and post-and-plank walls. In Thimos, the Antonius Chapel, built in 2005, invites visitors to pause for a moment. While the Hotzenhaus’s architectural focus is on its construction date and design, the chapel foregrounds a moment of rest.

A cycling route in the wider travel area

The 264-kilometre Southern Black Forest Cycle Route also passes through Murg in the wider travel area. It circles the Southern Black Forest Nature Park without any elevation gain. Compared with the local Nordic walking loops, this is a regional cycling route with a considerably greater total length. Check the current route before setting out.

Waldshut: changing public spaces

In the wider destination of Waldshut, Kaiserstraße tells a different story of the city. When it became a pedestrian zone in 1989, the Stadtbach stream was moved back to the middle of the street and three fountains were rebuilt. This change combines a new use of the street with the revival of earlier design elements. It complements the local Murg topics with a look at the development of a street in Waldshut.
