Discover Küssaberg
Accommodation in Küssaberg
For a stay in Küssaberg, you can choose from three distinct highlights: the Küssenberg nature and landscape protection area, Küssaburg Castle as the region’s landmark, and the permanent Roman exhibition in Rheinheim. These offer different ways to plan your day: trails and a circular hike in the protected area, a virtual tour of the castle, or a date for a public guided tour. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether nature, a walking route or cultural history should be the main focus.
The Küssenberg natural area
The Küssenberg nature and landscape protection area lies within the municipality of Küssaberg, in the districts of Bechtersbohl and Küssnach. The nature reserve covers around 209 hectares; adjoining sections of the supporting landscape protection area cover around 28 hectares. Forests dominate the area around Küssaburg Castle. On south-facing slopes, it continues beyond Küssnach, with orchards, warm, dry forests and species-rich grasslands where orchids grow. “South-facing” refers to slopes that face south. More than 15 protected orchid species and more than 50 breeding bird species are found in the protected area.
Trails and circular hikes
Numerous recreational trails for walkers, hikers and cyclists crisscross Küssenberg. The ridge trail from Küssaburg Castle to Geißlingen is particularly popular. The Bohnerzweg offers a circular hike of about five kilometres: it runs from Küßnach via Küssaburg Castle and Bechtersbohl, then back to Küßnach. The routes differ in their layout. On the Bohnerzweg, you return to your starting point; the ridge trail is named for its direction from Küssaburg Castle to Geißlingen. This can help with planning if you prefer a loop of an approximate length or a trail with the stated destination. Trail conditions can change; check them before hiking.
Küssaburg Castle: history and guided tours
Küssaburg Castle is a landmark of the region. It stands at an altitude of 634 metres and is thought to have been built in the first half of the 12th century. A virtual 3D tour takes you through its old walls and towers. The Küssaburgbund e. V. also offers public guided tours from May to September, on the last Saturday of each month at 4 p.m. The tours are offered on a seasonal schedule; check the dates for your chosen year before travelling. A walk leads from the parking area at the “Küssaburg” inn to the castle. Check local parking conditions before your visit.
Roman exhibition in Rheinheim
The Küssaberg Museum is located in the Old Town Hall in Rheinheim and features a permanent exhibition about the Romans. The historical themes are clearly distinct: the museum focuses on Roman times, while Küssaburg Castle is thought to have been built in the first half of the 12th century. If you are particularly interested in antiquity, you can make the museum a separate highlight alongside the castle and protected area.
