Kirchberg an der Jagst brings together historic architecture, natural history exhibits and a long circular cycling route. To plan your stay, you can first decide whether you want to focus on castle history, collections and exhibitions, or cycling. The Hofgarten Festival adds a seasonal highlight in July.

Kirchberg Castle and its architectural history

Kirchberg Castle began around 1240 as a castle belonging to the Knights of Kirchberg. In 1590, the complex was converted into a Renaissance palace; in 1735, Baroque additions were made. These dates mark different stages of development—from its medieval origins through the Renaissance to later Baroque alterations. If you are interested in architectural history, this sequence provides a timeline.

The orangery is another point of interest in the history of the architecture: it is dated to 1749–1750 and is located at Poststraße 21–23. This places it in the mid-18th century, after the Baroque additions to Kirchberg Castle in 1735.

The Sandelsches Museum: collections and natural history

The Sandelsches Museum is housed in a Baroque building dating from 1748, which was formerly used as a school. Its areas of focus include geology and paleontology, as well as temporary exhibitions. The collections include furniture, paintings, faience, pewter, weapons and coins, as well as prehistoric finds, furnishings and North African handicrafts. This brings decorative arts and historical objects together with natural history topics; the museum offers more than a single collection focus.

The geology section shows visible traces of the Kirchberg Fault, which is around 20 million years old. The paleontology section focuses on Stephanorinus Kirchbergensis, a 250,000-year-old forest rhinoceros whose remains were found in the Kirchberg area. The natural history exhibits thus bring together a geological feature and a specific prehistoric animal.

The Hofgarten Festival in July

The Hofgarten Festival runs for three days in July and takes place in the Baroque Hofgarten, which includes the orangery. For specific travel plans, check the dates and programme, as both may change.

Cycling on the Kocher-Jagst Cycling Route

The Kocher-Jagst Cycling Route is one of Kirchberg’s official cycling options and is a 332-kilometre circular route. This distance is a key consideration when planning a tour. As the route may change in the future, it is worth checking the stated distance again before making specific plans.

Schwäbisch Hall as the wider regional setting

Across the wider Schwäbisch Hall travel destination, the fertile Hohenlohe Plain in the north and the Franconian-Swabian Keuper uplands in the south shape the district’s landscape. Plains and deeply incised valleys, with protected slopes along the Kocher, Jagst and their tributaries, are also part of this landscape.

In the city of Schwäbisch Hall, the townscape is shaped by almost unchanged medieval lanes, a partly preserved town wall, numerous towers, covered wooden bridges, steps and Stäffele (stairways), as well as a historic marketplace. The Hällisch-Fränkisches Museum is housed there in seven historic buildings. A Romanesque wheel chandelier can be found in the collegiate church of St. Nicholas at Großcomburg Monastery.
