Discover city history and architecture

The Crailsheim City Museum is housed in two buildings and the chapel of the former Heilig-Geist-Spital, in a well-preserved historic part of the city. The water tower is also one of the city’s notable historic landmarks: it is one of the last structures of its kind and an industrial monument that points to Crailsheim’s important railway history.

A tour of the historic towers in the city center combines city history and architecture. Crailsheim also offers guided city walks and themed tours focusing on individual buildings and selected aspects of the city’s history. If you’d like to include a tour in your stay, check the latest booking details in advance.

Circular trails, nature, and learning stations

Hikers can choose from several routes with different features. The 16 circular hiking trails around Crailsheim combine nature and history. Marked with yellow signs, these circular routes lead to scenic viewpoints and historically significant places. In Eichwald, the forest nature trail offers an option with a stronger focus on learning about nature: along the 2.7-kilometer circular route, 17 stations explain tree species, as well as their size, life expectancy, and fruit.

In Schönebürgwald, a roughly two-kilometer fitness trail follows a circular route past a variety of exercise stations. For a different kind of walk, exploring a scale model of the solar system, the Planet Trail begins at the villa on Kreckelberg and runs for around two kilometers past wooden posts from Mercury to Neptune. The increasing distances, shown to scale, illustrate the actual distances in the solar system.

Around Degenbachsee near Jagstheim, a roughly 1.5-kilometer nature trail offers information about the lake’s wildlife and plant life on nine display boards. Each trail has a different focus: the forest nature trail is about trees, the Planet Trail about distances in the solar system, and the trail at Degenbachsee about nature by the water.

Cycling routes with a variety of profiles

Crailsheim has three legal trails of varying lengths for mountain biking. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Another type of tour is the almost 75-kilometer Wäldertour Ost: it starts in Crailsheim and makes for a day trip through extensive forests and unspoiled villages, passing numerous ponds and lakes.

The Kocher-Jagst Cycle Path offers a longer route for planning. This approximately 332-kilometer cycle path makes Crailsheim a possible starting point and stopover for one- or multi-day bike tours. The options described therefore range from a day trip through forests, villages, and along bodies of water to a longer route on which Crailsheim can serve as a starting point or a stop along the way.

Green spaces and time by the water

Spitalpark is a green space in the city, with wide lawns, shady paths, and areas to lie down, making it a place to stroll, linger, and relax. Jagstaue is a local recreation area along the Jagst and also offers wide lawns and shady paths for walks. If you’re looking for a green break in the city, consider Spitalpark; Jagstaue combines relaxation with riverside scenery.

Degenbachsee near Jagstheim is another destination for a trip from Crailsheim. On warm days, it’s a place to swim, sunbathe, and relax. You can combine time by the lake with insights into the local wildlife and plant life by visiting the nature trail.

Playgrounds and family-friendly destinations

The Horaffen playground in Jagstaue has a range of play equipment, as well as a water and sand area by the Jagst. Schönebürg playground has a barbecue area, swings, slides, and other play equipment. This means there are options for different interests: you can choose between play areas by the river and a playground with a barbecue area and classic equipment.

At Kreckelberg, the destination brings together nature, history, and leisure activities. The bird and animal park right next to the villa is family-friendly, with numerous animal species, including birds and pygmy goats, and has a playground. The villa at Wilhelmshöhe offers views across Crailsheim and the surrounding area. Kreckelberg thus brings the animal park and the viewpoint together at one destination, without limiting a visit to just one of these highlights.

When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you’d like to experience Crailsheim mainly through its city history, outdoor activities on hiking or cycling routes, nature by the water, or family-friendly destinations. These interests give your search for a hotel in Crailsheim a clear direction.
