Gaildorf: Cycling Routes, Town Walls and Culture Trail
Accommodation in Gaildorf
Gaildorf offers several distinct starting points for planning your trip: cycling routes pass through the town, and one cycling tour starts and ends in Gaildorf. There are also traces of history, a culture trail and a viewpoint. If you are looking for a hotel in Gaildorf, you can plan your stay around cycling, town history or scenic views.
Cycling tours connected with Gaildorf
The Kocher-Jagst Cycle Route passes through Gaildorf town centre and by the Old Castle; the Stromberg-Murr Cycle Route also passes through Gaildorf. The cycling tour on the Idyllische Straße starts and ends in Gaildorf and runs through the Rottal valley before climbing to the plateau near Gschwend. The routes therefore offer different points of interest: a passage through the town centre with a connection to the castle, or a tour that starts and finishes in Gaildorf and runs through the Rottal valley to the plateau. This lets you choose a cycling stay to suit the kind of route you prefer.
Town history and the Culture Trail
Several remains of the former Gaildorf town wall can be seen along Mauerstraße. At the western end of Kirchstraße, the Brandenburger Törle marks an old opening in the medieval town wall leading to Mauerstraße. Today, a wooden bridge leads from the gate across the Kocher and connects the town centre with the river meadows opposite. Here, former fortifications, an opening in the wall and a present-day river crossing come together in one townscape.
You can book tours of the Old Castle with the Gaildorf night watchman at the Gaildorf Tourist Information Office. Check in advance whether bookings are currently available, as this may change.
The Gaildorf Culture Trail runs along Schloss-Straße, past the Old Castle and the town church, then over the Kocher bridge and back to its starting point at the Hallengelände. Route conditions may change; check the route before setting out.
Views from Kernerturm
From Kernerturm, unobstructed views extend over the ski slope down to Gaildorf, into the Kocher valley and towards the Limpurger Mountains rising to the northeast. Seasonal tree growth may partially obstruct the view. Plan your visit during the seasonal opening period from Easter to the end of October, on Sundays and public holidays, and confirm in advance whether access will be possible on your chosen date.
Culture in Schwäbisch Hall
In the wider destination of Schwäbisch Hall, the historic old town offers its own cultural and historical attractions. It brings together almost unchanged medieval lanes and a partly preserved town wall, numerous towers, covered wooden bridges, many steps and Stäffele, as well as a historic market square. The Hällisch-Fränkisches Museum is housed in seven historic buildings. The collegiate church of St. Nicholas at Großcomburg Monastery contains a Romanesque wheel chandelier. These places in Schwäbisch Hall add a distinct cultural dimension to your trip.
