Hirschberg an der Bergstraße: Vineyards and local history
Accommodation in Hirschberg an der Bergstraße
For a stay in Hirschberg an der Bergstraße, you can choose between different focuses: walking and hiking trails through vineyards, historic walking tours of the local districts, and evidence of Roman and later local history. For planning your trip, it helps to decide first whether you mainly want to experience the landscape or explore the history of the local districts. The trails and sites offer specific points of interest, from the Hohe Waid to the Town Hall carillon.
Vineyards, Hohe Waid and local walking tours
Hirschberg is part of the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park and the Bergstraße-Odenwald UNESCO Global Geopark. In Hirschberg-Leutershausen, scenic walking and hiking trails lead through the vineyards up to the Hohe Waid. At 455 m above sea level, it is the highest elevation in the Leutershausen district. This gives you both walking and hiking trails to consider when planning your outings; the Hohe Waid provides a clearly named destination.
There are historic walking tours in Hirschberg’s districts of Leutershausen and Großsachsen; each is 1.7 km long. Their equal length makes it easy to compare their scope. Your choice therefore mainly depends on which local history you would like to learn more about.
Historic traces in the local districts
The remains of a Roman country estate, the Villa Rustica, are located in the Hirschberg district of Großsachsen. A church dedicated to Mary Magdalene is mentioned at this site in 1430; it probably already existed there around 200 years earlier. In Hirschberg-Leutershausen, the synagogue was inaugurated on 4 September 1868. These points of interest span Roman remains, the church’s early mention and the history of the synagogue in the 19th century.
Carillon and Burgensteig trail
The carillon above the entrance to Hirschberg Town Hall was inaugurated on 19 October 1996. Its 18 Meissen porcelain bells play a seasonal song daily at 09:05, 12:05 and 17:05. The hourly chime also sounds from 08:00 to 20:00. If you would like to plan your visit around the carillon, check the schedule on site.
The seventh stage of the Burgensteig trail runs from Hirschberg-Großsachsen to Schriesheim. Separately, the castle ruins on the Hirschberg and Schanzenköpfle lie between Leutershausen and Schriesheim. If you plan to hike the stage, check the current trail conditions before setting out.
