Nußloch combines diverse landscapes with nature trails, forests and local history. When planning your stay, these different themes can shape the focus of your trip: from limestone and fruit tree varieties to the history of the town and its municipal forest.

Landscape and Municipal Forest

The natural landscape around Nußloch brings together the Kraichgau, the Odenwald, the Rhine Plain and the Southern Bergstraße. The municipal area ranges from 103 to 317 m above sea level. Its varied soils contribute to a diverse landscape and add a local perspective to the broader landscape names.

The approximately 350-hectare Nußloch municipal forest has been managed in a nature-friendly way for several decades. A large part lies within the Bergstraße-Süd landscape conservation area and is designated as a Flora-Fauna-Habitat site. Beech trees define this species-rich forest; other trees include oaks, ash, maples, lindens, elms, larches, spruces and Douglas firs. There are also service trees, wild service trees and walnut trees. The ground vegetation is also diverse, including rare orchids.

Nature Trails with Different Themes

The Nußloch Discovery Trail offers insights into the formation of limestone, its extraction today and the creation of valuable natural oases through restoration after quarrying. Its main themes are therefore geological development, extraction and subsequent restoration.

The Fruit Tree Trail focuses on fruit tree varieties: it is about three kilometres long and passes through scenic parts of the municipal area. Thirty-two information boards describe the different varieties. This gives you an idea of the trail’s approximate length and main theme.

The Forest Nature Trail starts at the Weiße Hohl car park. Its circular route follows Wieslocher Weg, Blockhüttenweg, Neuer Weg and Maisbacher Fußweg back to the starting point. Along the trail, you can learn about numerous tree species and discover interesting facts about the Nußloch municipal forest. The Bird Trail in the municipal forest also loops back to the starting point via Wieslocher Weg, Amerikanerweg, Tannengartenweg and Neuer Weg. Both trail descriptions name specific sections of the forest; the Forest Nature Trail explicitly links its route to information about tree species and the municipal forest.

Local History at the Heritage Museum

The Nußloch Heritage Museum invites visitors to explore the town’s lived history through objects on display. It is located at Fahrweg 3, just a few minutes’ walk from Lindenplatz. If you are planning a visit to the museum, it is best to check visiting arrangements in advance.

A Local Fruit Tradition

The exceptionally sweet honey plum grows in its pure wild form within the Nußloch municipal area. In the past, plums were used in many ways, including for baking and cooking, and in liquid form. These traditional uses add a glimpse of local culinary history to the topic of fruit tree varieties.

Nußloch and the Leimbach Route

Nußloch is part of the intermunicipal Leimbach Route for leisure and tourism. Other participating municipalities include Sinsheim, Dielheim, Wiesloch, Leimen, Sandhausen, Oftersheim, Schwetzingen, Ketsch and Brühl. The project is coordinated by the Heidelberg-Mannheim Municipal Association. The route is therefore a joint initiative involving several municipalities; as a distinct tourism route, it complements the local nature trails.
