Hillside Castle and Local History

Zuzenhausen hillside castle was probably built above the village around 1250. Its architectural description includes a shield wall dating from the late 14th century: it is 3.6 meters thick, 20 meters high and about 30 meters long. These three measurements show different dimensions of the same wall—its thickness, height and length. The dates must also be distinguished clearly: the castle probably dates from around 1250, while the shield wall dates from the late 14th century.

The access restriction is important for your plans: the ruins cannot be entered because of their poor condition. So do not plan to visit the interior. The hillside castle nevertheless remains a distinctive historical landmark as you explore Zuzenhausen’s history.

Natural Areas, Trails and Recreation

Zuzenhausen lies on the edge of the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park and forms the northern gateway to the Kraichgau. The Mühle Kolb Erlebniszentrum in Zuzenhausen lies between the forest and the River Elsenz in the Kraichgau. Cycling and hiking trails can be found in the Elsenz and Schwarzbach valley floodplains and in the local forests. When choosing a route, consider this specific question: would you rather focus on the river floodplains or the woodland as the setting for your walk or ride?

The Menachem and Fred Hiking Trail begins at Hoffenheim S-Bahn station and ends at Neidenstein S-Bahn station. Geocaching stations provide information about the lives of Fred and Menachem, Jewish history and features of the surrounding area. Three panels along the route also cover the Jewish history of Hoffenheim and Neidenstein, as well as local features of the places along the route. Alongside its named endpoints, the trail therefore has a thematic focus on biographies, Jewish history and local characteristics.

The Fit-Park in Häuselgrund, opened in 2021, offers a different kind of recreation: it is a freely accessible recreational facility for multiple generations. Zuzenhausen is also connected to the S-Bahn network and therefore to local public transport. Check the current timetable for your travel dates if you plan to arrive by public transport.
