Zwiefalten between architectural history and trails
Zwiefalten can be explored through two different interests: the history of the minster and the trails that connect the town with hiking and cycling. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between a cultural-history stay and tours with specific routes. The minster, a museum and several named routes each offer different starting points.
The minster and Zwiefalten’s history
The Minster of Our Lady is one of the most significant examples of German late Baroque architecture. Its history can be understood through two dates: until 1803, it was the abbey church of Zwiefalten Benedictine Abbey; since 1812, it has been a parish and pilgrimage church.
If you would like to learn about the minster as part of a guided tour, register in advance. Tours may only be conducted by authorized minster guides from the Catholic parish; self-guided tours are not permitted. Take these requirements into account when planning your visit and arrange your registration before you arrive.
The First Württemberg Psychiatric Museum offers a different historical focus. It is housed in a former cemetery chapel and provides insights into the development of psychiatric care. The collection of plans by the monastery’s master builders Joseph Benedikt Schneider (1689–1763) and Hans Martin Schneider (1692–1768) is also part of Zwiefalten’s architectural history. It is considered a rare testament to the South German Baroque. Cycling routes with different points of reference
Zwiefalten lies on the section of the Danube Cycle Path between Sigmaringen and Ulm. The Zwiefalter Alb Cycle Route (R2) offers another specific point of reference: it is signposted from the parking lot near the Stationsgaststätte and leads via Kleinengstingen, Bernloch, Ödenwaldstetten, Aichelau, Aichstetten, Tigerfeld and Gauingen, as well as through the Gossenzuger Valley, to Zwiefalten. For navigation, both a section between two cities and a signposted route with named intermediate stops are relevant.
In addition, eight mountain bike tours start in Zwiefalten, heading in all four cardinal directions. When planning a cycling trip, you can distinguish between the Danube Cycle Path, the Zwiefalter Alb Cycle Route and the mountain bike tours, rather than treating all routes as the same type of offering. Check that your chosen route is available before setting off.
Hiking: circular routes and trails to Zwiefalten
The certified premium hiking trail “hochgehpilgert” is 13.2 km long. There are also five well-maintained circular hiking trails around Zwiefalten, ranging from 5.5 to 13.5 km in length.
