Discover Trochtelfingen
Accommodation in Trochtelfingen
Trochtelfingen offers a variety of options for a stay: historic churches and towers, the Museum at the High Tower, the ALB-GOLD Visitor Center and several hiking trails. Highlights range from architectural history to making and tasting noodles and spaetzle, as well as routes through a variety of landscapes.
Churches, Towers and Museum
The Catholic parish church of St. Martin combines architectural elements from several centuries. Parts of the tower date from the 12th and 15th centuries. The rectangular choir dates from after 1322, and the nave was built around 1450. The individual parts of the church therefore reflect different periods of construction.
The Counts of Werdenberg’s castle is also among Trochtelfingen’s historic buildings. It was probably built between 1488 and 1497. The Powder Tower is a small surviving round tower on the western side of the town. The High Tower is one of the buildings that define Trochtelfingen’s townscape and can be seen behind the town wall.
The Museum at the High Tower features a permanent exhibition of original documents, objects, pictures and photographs. The exhibits offer different ways to explore the topics covered. The museum is generally open twice a month, from 2 to 5 p.m.; admission is free. Check the current opening date before your visit.
The Hennenstein Chapel, also known as Hünenstein Chapel, contains frescoes that have survived only in fragments in some places. A surviving hermitage is also part of the site. The chapel and hermit’s dwelling are located near the Trochtelfingen ski lift.
ALB-GOLD and Lauchertsee
At the ALB-GOLD Visitor Center, activities focus on making noodles and spaetzle: an informative guided tour covers the subject, and visitors can also try both. Selected products can be purchased on site. The visitor center is also a starting point for hiking and cycling tours. This combines a culinary highlight with an opportunity to plan outings.
Lauchertsee has a barbecue area and a playground. Swimming in the lake is not permitted. This restriction is important to bear in mind if you want to combine time by the water with other activities.
Hiking Trails by Distance and Landscape
The routes vary both in length and in the landscapes they pass through. The Augstberg circular trail is an easy 4.1-kilometer hike that takes about an hour and a half. The Lauchertsee-Hausen loop is just over eight kilometers long and, in good weather, offers clear views as far as the Swiss Alps.
The Lauchertsee-Neuban loop is just under eight kilometers long. It crosses the plateau of Mägerkingen’s local mountain, which is edged by juniper heaths protected under nature conservation laws. The Lauchertsee-Hausen loop is slightly longer; there, views as far as the Swiss Alps are explicitly dependent on good weather. Despite their similar lengths, the two loops therefore differ in the landscapes and viewpoints described.
At just under 16 kilometers, the Kuppenalb loop is longer than the Lauchertsee loops mentioned above. It combines Trochtelfingen’s picturesque half-timbered architecture, views from Augstberg and nature at Neuban. The Städtles loop offers a different focus: outside the historic town center, it runs alongside meadows and fields and through the forest. The routes therefore offer different options, with the town center and the surrounding countryside as their respective themes.
Cycling is another focus: Trochtelfingen lies on the Albtrauf mountain biking trail. The ALB-GOLD Visitor Center is also a starting point for cycling tours. These options complement the hiking routes and offer another way to plan your trip.
