Römerstein: Cross-country Ski Trails, Views and History
Accommodation in Römerstein
Römerstein combines winter sports and tours with scenic views, distinctive landscapes and local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Römerstein, these different highlights can guide your travel plans. For skiing and sledging, the season and snow conditions are decisive; viewpoints, buildings and historic sites offer further ideas.
Winter Sports in Donnstetten
The Donnstetten ski area has three family-friendly runs, each 365 m long. Four drag lifts take skiers up to 850 m above sea level. Operations are seasonal and depend on snow conditions, so check the current conditions before making plans. Sledging is possible on all ski slopes in Römerstein, provided the snow conditions allow it.
Several clubs offer ski lessons at the Donnstetten ski lift. You book lessons directly with the club concerned; offers and booking methods may change. At the Donnstetten summer toboggan run, riders control their own speed using levers at the sides. Operating conditions and dates may vary here too, so it is advisable to check the latest dates before your trip.
Cross-country Ski Trails and Tours
For cross-country skiing, Römerstein has more than 60 km of interconnected trails, which can be combined to create individual circular routes. The Donnstetten trail starts at the Donnstetten ski lift, is 12 km long and connects to the Alb-Bad trail in Westerheim. The network can be combined to create your own circular routes; the Donnstetten trail, by contrast, has a fixed starting point at the ski lift and a connection to Westerheim. Check the current trail conditions before planning your trip.
The Römerstein circuit is 20 km long and has 200 metres of elevation gain. The start and finish are at the car park of the sports and events hall in Böhringen. The “Römerstein Tower – A View of the Whole” hike offers a different landscape perspective: it passes through changing scenery featuring karst terrain and mustard-coloured meadows. The circuit focuses on distance and elevation gain, while the hike highlights the changing landscape.
Tower and Swabian Alb Landscape
The Römerstein Tower is Römerstein’s landmark and stands between Böhringen and Donnstetten at an altitude of 874 m. The Swabian Alb Association built it in 1912 on the highest point of the Central Swabian Alb. The tower consists of a timber-framed structure clad in wood, set on a solid base, and offers panoramic views across the Swabian Alb. Its construction history, design and views all contribute to the character of this striking landmark.
Other landscape features can also be distinguished. Hasenhäusle Hill lies south of the Aussiedlerhof farmstead and offers views of the Swabian Alb village of Donnstetten. The Kanzel is a limestone formation edged with beech trees, located on a slope. Donnstetten itself lies in a maar, a volcanic crater. Together, these places represent different landforms: a view of the village, a rock formation on a slope and a volcanic crater.
Local History in Donnstetten and Zainingen
The local history museum in Donnstetten shows how people lived and worked around 1900. Here, everyday history sits alongside the landscapes and buildings that characterise Römerstein. Zainingen is home to a large Hüle, or village pond, and a late-medieval fortified church. There is also a group of burial mounds dating from the Hallstatt period. These varied features range from a village pond to a medieval fortified church and an archaeological site from the Hallstatt period.
