Discover Hülben: Celtic Trail and Albtrauf
Accommodation in Hülben
Hülben can be explored through a range of themes: late Celtic history, hiking trails along the Albtrauf escarpment, and the discovery of a stalactite cave. For planning your trip, the Celtic Discovery Trail offers a route with a specific stated length; other hiking trails have their own highlights, such as valley views or Burg Hohenneuffen as a destination.
Celtic Discovery Trail and trails along the Albtrauf
The six-kilometre-long Celtic Discovery Trail runs through the late Celtic Oppidum of Heidengraben. You can explore the route using a free multimedia app. This means the trail combines a specified length with the theme of the late Celtic settlement. Hiking trails along the Albtrauf offer a different focus: starting from Hülben, they follow the escarpment edge and provide views across the valley. There are also hiking trails from Hülben to Burg Hohenneuffen. These trails offer different options for planning your day, without implying any particular connection between them.
The cave’s history at the entrance to town
A stalactite cave lies directly beneath Landesstraße 250 at the entrance to Hülben from the direction of Bad Urach. It was discovered in September 1978 during road construction. This means that two distinct historical references feature in the local area: the late Celtic Oppidum on the Celtic Discovery Trail and the cave’s discovery in connection with road construction. The stated place and date give the cave’s history a specific connection to Hülben.
A destination outside Hülben
The “Dürrlau” playground is about 500 metres outside Hülben, surrounded by greenery. Its facilities include a climbing frame, a double swing, two spring riders, a seesaw and a small playhouse. There is also a play structure with a slide, a sliding pole and a suspension bridge, balance beams, and adjacent bushes and hedges. A barbecue area is also available. Its specific facilities distinguish this spot from Hülben’s hiking and history themes. Hülben also has a motor and glider airfield.
More to explore in the wider Reutlingen destination
If you are planning beyond Hülben, the wider Reutlingen destination offers other distinct cultural and nature themes. In Zwiefalten, the Minster of Our Lady is the centrepiece of the historic monastery and pilgrimage town; it is one of the most important buildings of the German Baroque period. Concerts are held in the minster every year, and their dates vary. If a concert is important to your plans, check the specific event dates.
In Münsingen, the Swabian Alb Biosphere Centre uses interactive exhibits as well as audio and video contributions to share information about the nature, landscape and people of the biosphere area. Münsingen’s Old Castle is also home to the Castle Town Museum, which presents the history and culture of the Münsinger Alb. The Biosphere Centre’s educational group activities include felt-making, as well as planting, harvesting and cooking together; programme details may change. At the former Münsingen military training area, trained TrÜP guides take visitors on individual tours or join other visitors on tours held on specific dates throughout the year.
Lichtenstein Castle is another historic and scenic landmark in the Reutlingen destination: it was built between 1840 and 1842 on the foundations of an older knight’s castle. The Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail leads from the castle past scenic rock formations and directly to Nebelhöhle cave. Public transport does not run directly to the castle. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen (Oberhausener Steige), Honau and Traifelberg; from there, you can hike to the castle. As public transport connections can change, check the current connection before planning your trip.
