Neresheim: Abbey, Museum and Way of St. James
Accommodation in Neresheim
Cultural history and walking routes are at the heart of a trip to Neresheim. The abbey church is a cultural heritage site of European importance and an outstanding attraction. The monastery museum also offers a look at the monastery’s history and its significance for science, education and art. Important for planning: the museum rooms can only be visited as part of a guided tour with a knowledgeable guide. Tours for individuals and groups are available only by prior arrangement with the monastery administration.
Abbey Church and Monastery Museum
Housed on three floors in the convent building and the prelature, the monastery museum provides an overview of the monastery’s history and construction. The abbey’s historical significance for science, education and art is also among the topics covered. The museum also includes the largely preserved collection of scientific teaching materials from the former monastery secondary school. It adds a tangible collection from the monastery’s educational history to the broader picture of the institution.
The tour ends with a visit to the ballroom, whose stucco images were created by Dominikus Zimmermann. The museum visit thus combines a historical overview with a collection and a specific artistic highlight. If you are mainly interested in seeing the ballroom and its stucco images, note that this visit is also part of the guided tour. Arrange your visit with the monastery administration in advance.
Routes around Neresheim
For exploring on foot, two different types of route help with orientation: the Baroque Trail is a walking route around Neresheim Abbey. The trail to the Härtsfeld Museum Railway, by contrast, leads from Neresheim station to Dischingen station. It is not a circular route and is also part of the cycle route.
Another Way of St. James begins in Neresheim and leads pilgrims via Tübingen onward to France. The scallop shell is used as the route marker. Shell signs can be found, for example, in the car park in front of the monastery, at the start of Klosterallee by the “Old Station,” in the “Zwing” nature reserve, and west of the Tourist Information building at Hauptstraße 21.
The Härtsfeld Railway and Nature Topics
The history of the Härtsfeld Railway also has specific points of interest in Neresheim. The historic railway’s operating hub, the “Central Station,” was located right at the foot of Ulrichsberg. The Härtsfeld Railway Museum opened in Neresheim station. Museum railway operations on the Neresheim–Sägmühle section began in October 2001.
Another topic can be found in the area around the destination: the old lime works near Neresheim in the Egau Valley are home to a bee education trail, a wild bee observation station and a bee garden.
More Destinations in the Ostalbkreis
The Ostalbkreis, as the wider travel destination, also has its own cultural and hiking attractions. In Rainau, the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes runs for about six kilometres through the districts of Buch, Schwabsberg and Dalkingen; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. Significant sections and individual monuments of the Limes have been preserved in Limes Park Rainau. A reconstructed watchtower offers panoramic views across the Ostalb region.
The Limes circular hiking trail near Rainau is about eleven kilometres long; walking time is approximately two and a half hours. Signposted, it runs from the Limes wall and the Limes tower between Buch and Schwabsberg, through the “Mahdholz” forest along the Limes, to the southern edge of Schwabsberg.
